Well... I said I wanted to stir things up - I guess I did.
With all due respect I think it varies for different people, and again reserving judgment against your fellow believer is key.
I think it is mostly a matter of maturity and self discipline. For example, I routinely meet with members of the opposite sex for coffee to discuss business. (mostly real estate agents and sales personnel) Also, I am alone with ladies in their homes on a regular basis at the time of my service calls. It is not uncommon for my first job in the mornings to be met by the lady of the house in her bath robe. These are both new and repeat customers.

Avoid the appearance of impropriety as you see it and never violate your conscience, but also know you can't please everyone all the time.
