I remember going to the Laundry Mat. I didn't even know Laundry Mat's existed. I do remember wringer washers tho. I'll never forget the day my mom's arm got caught in one all the way up to her elbow. She screamed and I ran out the door puking
I remember when we had Shopping Centers instead of Malls. We didn't get to go to Shopping Centers either. We did go to alot of second hand stores, for things like clothes and shoes.
I remember getting groceries on credit, and when we paid our bill every 2 weeks, kids got a little bag of free penny candy. Bigger kids got candy bars. And that was about the only time we got a cold drink.
Little squares of ice cream at school with, 2 graham crackers.
I remember little keen switches, and how they stung your legs.
Drinking milk with a little coffee and sugar in it with my grandmother, and sipping out of the saucer, because some spilled out.
I remember talcum powder. My mom used Cashmere Bouquet. My grandma told me that Baby Powder would cure anything. If you were having a bad day, she would rub your back with baby powder and you would always feel better. I still use a ton of it today even
I remember girdles. OMG! I had forgotten those nasty things!
I remember the first time I wore high heel shoes.
I remember the first time I had to get a bra. That involved an all day trip to downtown Toledo to Lasalle's. That's the first time I was ever in a department store in my whole life.

getting a pack of baseball cards was almost as exciting as the stale gum that came with them
gas was under a dollar
parachute pants were in
skinny pants were in...wait those are back yuck
CLC produced 50% of our worship choruses
88 Reasons was a huge lie
Reagan was President
Pagers were worn proudly on belt straps...

Re: I Remember When...

On the ironing of handkerchiefs....

I still iron mine when I take them with me... I like to iron. For a while I made my own spray starch.

Sometimes if I am already sitting there ironing I will iron my money (bills... not coins... of course). My wife laughs at me. But... hey... who wants wrinkly money?

I think it's funny that you can almost tell the approximate age of some on here by the things they remember.

Pagers? Those weren't around till I was an adult - married even. If Mom wanted you when I was a kid, she had a big old cowbell she'd ring and you had better come running! Or she'd just stand outside the door and holler real loud, "Margie, Chickie, Thunder, supper!"

Reagan was president? Wow, that would have been when I got married too. Let's see, I remember JFK being assasinated when I was in grade school. We were out on recess when the teachers all came out and gathered us up and had us come in the gym/lunchrooom to watch what was happening on TV. They were all crying and upset. Before that I never had payed attention to who was president. I believe Eisenhower was in when I was small.

What's 88 Reasons? I've never heard of it.

Re: I Remember When...

btw, please don't think I'm picking fun at you. I truly am amazed at the different things that each generation remembers from their childhood. I wonder what our kids will remember when they are 50?

Really... I thought everyone had heard of that...

It was a book published in 1987 entitled 88 Reason why Jesus is coming back in 1988 or something those lines.

I am happy to say I never bought one. LOL

But many, many did. Lots of people started coming back to church etc.
