Hey dude! I'm not trying to "label" folks - really. Just observing the interesting dynamics is all...

You believe women should not cut their hair and always wear skirts/dresses, right? lol IIRC you believe in head coverings too..veils. If that's not conservative...? I'd be scared to find out what is. heh
As for the rest, listen to Sis Alvear. I don't know anything about the group, but I know she's not one to easily speak against a group. If she says to stay away, trust her on that...ok? She's seen more than you hopefully ever will.

Re: Growing Up Mennonite
Steve, just thought you might be interested - for Christmas Walt got me 4 books:
MennoFolk2, A Sampler of Mennonite & Amish Folklore by Ervin Beck, Editor
The Sound of the Hammer by Carl Conrad Britsch
This is story about the Amish-Mennonite folks who came to NW Ohio back in the early 1800's from Switzerland
Out of the Wilderness by Beck
Alot of NW OH Amish-Mennonite genealogy information in this book
The Days of My Years by Walter Stuckey
Walter is a distant cousin of mine. It is his life-story, a ton of Stuckey genealogy and the story of his ministry at the Lockport Mennonite Church.
I'm anxious to get reading

That one has been out of print for about 20 years or so. I was so thrilled when I saw it had been reprinted one more time and found them at Sauder's Village. I was shopping for MissBrattifield when I ran across all these books. Sauder's is a local historical museum in Archbold, Ohio. Erie Sauder, the founder, was a staunch Mennonite man. Much of the history they tell there is connected with the Mennonites of the western Fulton County, eastern Williams County area of Ohio where the Amish-Mennonite settled when they first came here. Sauder's is one of my favorite places in the world to go to. If you all ever make it back to this area, I will take you there. Plan a whole day for it.

What does IIRC mean? , I believed some of the things you mentioned in my earlier Christian walk (I was saved under teachers that believed that stuff). Now I don't believe a woman has to have uncut hair or a veil on her head. I think it's important for men and women to dress in gender-appropriate and modest apparel, and for the sisters I know they've all seen that as skirts/dresses.

If I recall correctly.
And then I stand corrected.

Re: Growing Up Mennonite
Mennonites believe in salvation by faith, but to varying degrees also tend to have commitment and discipleship attached as an integral part of becoming a Christian.
They affirm an Adult Believers Baptism as public proclamation of conversion, and most do not expect a specific sign of the Holy Spirit's indwelling.
The more conservative churches have greater list of works/fruits they look for.
Mennonites are not generally judgmental of other Christian Churches - at least not to the point where they openly question their salvation.

But they would question the salvation of one leaving the group, would they not?
