Thank you, everyone, for all of the positive comments. I will share them with Keith tomorrow. It'll be good for his ego

Really cool Marg! reminds me of myself when i was coming up.

Is he picking all this out my ear? if so, then he's certainly a natural.
I noticed he's not reading music or a chord chart.

I hope you are getting him involved in your church music dept

Mark, he is playing all of this by ear. That's how he plays everything.

When he was 4, our neighbor called and asked if she could give Keith piano lessons because he kept going to her piano and playing songs. The other kids went over to it and banged and banged. But Keith played whole songs. So she started his lessons. But they only lasted less than a year because she would give him the lesson for the next week, play thru it once for him so he'd know what it was supposed to sound like and send him home. Then he wouldn't touch the piano all week and go back the next week and sit down and play it for her perfectly. I decided he needed someone who was going to be tougher on him. That's when I hooked him up with the teacher he stayed with for several years. He really did learn alot from Kelly. But then he started not practicing again. He's more interested in guitar right now. So he's not been taking lessons for over a year again. He can play what's written. But he prefers to play by ear. He is in our ensemble at church. But that's it. Our pastor is very strange about people playing special numbers. That only happens very rarely. And is usually Keith when it does, at the insistance of our music director. We have a deaf guy playing guitar (I mean that seriously) in our praise band. Keith is much better than him. But he is the music director's son in law. Oh well.

Make him stay the course. He has the talent, you have the discipline and that's a perfect marriage. He'll thank you later on for knowing what was best for him and not letting him get lax in the things God's blessed him with. He can play the guitar too but not unless he sticks to the piano too. He can't drop one for the other You have a gifted child but some gifted children, especially those in the arts, are moody. If they can ever get disciplined, the sky is the limit. Do not let up lol

I was watching his hands, he needs to work on technique. He needs to practice intense drills and scales. If he will do this, it will make his playing so much easier for years to come.

He has to do these things NOW or it wont ever happen marg. Music is DEVELOPMENTAL and has to be done in the early years.

Thanks for the great advice, Mark. I will pass that along to Keith.

I'm going to call and get him in with a woman who teaches piano from First Apostolic in Toledo. Her son also teaches guitar. So I'll just set him up for back-to-back lessons. He's pretty excited about that
