I hate to hear that about your son, when someone really needs it they should be able to take it without people trying to convince them they don't need it. When you understand the "process" or lack of it that causes the problem, it's easy to understand.
I do think Ritalin was over prescribed at times - just given to overactive children without testing them for ADD. Some of those kids just needed a good swift kick in the rear. Because of this, it's given the kids that really do have a problem a harder time from taking the meds.

When I was 5 years old I was put on Ritalin with out testing, I got in to the bottle and took a bunch of pills and my mother did not make me take it any more.
When I was 7 years old we moved to Okinawa, Japan. Second grade I had a witch of a teacher. I started getting in fights with her.
Went back on something else again, no testing.
Took it for a while and mom stopped it, said I was just not active.
Moved to Yokohama, Japan. Started getting in trouble at school again...
This time I took many test....no ADHD or back then I was not hyperactive Nor did I have a learning dis-abilty..I had a high I.Q. . I was not given any meds.
But the stress of teachers knowing that I might have a problem followed me to every school..
When we moved back to the USA... I was in a special ed class {because of the records} ...even though I had a HIGH I.Q......
I ended up later dropping out of high school.
I have often wondered if Ritalin and the other drug created problems for me.
