Scripture is replete with references to the Spirit and Water working together in God's plan for man's approach to Him. From the beginning, the Spirit hovered upon the water... those who passed under the could and through the sea (spirit and water), the priests that washed at the laver, lest they die not... then I haven't even hinted at new testament references. No, I havn't read the whole thread, but to deny that Jesus was speaking about baptism in John 3 is an argument ad ignorantia IMHO.... (TIC)

Why would Jesus be preaching something to Nicodemus that couldn't happen to him? Peter didn't preach Baptism and the Holy Ghost was not poured out until later. Just doesn't make sense to preach something that was not available to the person you are preaching to.
I take
John 3:5 to mean that every man must be born of the water and the spirit, not just those after Pentecost.
