Re: T.F. Tenney at the Journey (Mark Johnston's)

Why has it been so long since we had a serious Presidential Candidate with facial hair?

That's just the world and the things of the world. Presidential candidates all love power and worldliness. The love of God is usually very far from their minds.

1 John 2:15-17 !

William Howard Taft - the last President with "facial hair." The first President to install a bath tub in the White House.

My point is how does society view beards culturally? If I were a missionary in the Middle East or somewhere where beards were culturally "expected" upon men I'd advise Christians to wear a beard to respect cultural sensibilities so as to not bring a reproach upon the message. However, if in the Western World being clean shaven is more culturally acceptable I'd advise that Christians be clean shaven.

That's the only logical angle I can come up with regarding any notion of prohibiting beards. Personally, I don't think it's a sin and I don't see any serious issue with it.

Throughout the development of Western culture since the fall of Rome, the Roman Catholic Church has exercised the leading role in educating our scholars, diplomats, merchants and kings. A "secular" education is a very recent development. A "Protestant" education is only a little bit older.

To understand the place of men's traditionally "accepted" hair styles you only need to look to Rome.

Fascinating article, Pel. Taft complained about the four months of campaigning as the most uncomfortable in his life. Oh, for the olden days!!

I also liked what he said at the end of his life when he was the supreme court justice regarding his time spent as the President.

Re: T.F. Tenney at the Journey (Mark Johnston's)

I have had a beard since the early 90's and have never had a problem. I know the general rules in the UPCI churches I attend and I am OK with that. It is the pastor's responsibility to set rules for the church and if I wanted to sing or take part on the platform I would find a church where the pastor allowed beards. In fact when I grew the beard the pastor (who had a beard) talked me into it.

Don't belittle pastor's and churches who don't agree with your weak idea of standards.

Does your pastors pastor allow beards or is your pastor a rebel?

Cool Re: T.F. Tenney at the Journey (Mark Johnston's)

Just to add to the facial hair saga:

My dad (b 1915) was saved in 1930. For most of his adult life he wore a mustache. It's on all of the old photos. Pre upc and after the merger. He was always faithful and participated in the choir and played a musical instrument.

Except for his career(WW II) in the army , he was only a member of the original church he was saved in.

In 1970 the church got another pastor. He "requested" that the board members not have TV's or facial hair.(possibly other "requests" also but I was gone from home)
That is when my dad shaved his mustache

I remember mustaches on men at our UPC church in Cincinnati in the late nineteen fifties and early sixties. Nothing was thought about it.

Also, facial hair and "afros" on men and short hair on women in the African American Churches locally was not an issue as far as I can remember.
