Elizabeth, if the guy was carrying a pocket knife, I would agree. But cash is NO reason what so every to retain anyone. Cash is NOT a threat.
However, considering people suspicious and thereby giving law enforcement the right to detain, search, and perform inquires about an individual with cash, marches down the dangerous road of eroding very important freedoms that we Americans have held sacrosanct for a couple hundred years.
9/11 is no excuse to hand over basic freedom to the Police.

And then factor in idiots like this giving you a bad day.
Have you told them you are an admitted law breaker and have been caught trying to carry a pocket knife into a police station?

I'm still wondering if it was that important to not answer their "simple" questions because he was afraid of incriminating himself with his answers. How would he have been incriminated? What could have entrapped him?
I know the whole point is that he was stopped for carrying cash and Napolitano said that they can't detain him for that, BUT - I think I would have just answered their questions and see where it went from there.

I think you need to review some of the airport's security directives.

And we're going to keep it that way by following up on EVERY red flag.

I didn't break a law Coadie... had I broken a law they would have arrested me on the spot.

It is also dishonest he was detained for public safety. He was illegally detained and when they were told so they let him go.
I don't know the security directives in place at the time. There may have been a security directive that they were to be on the look out for a network of known arms dealers carrying a substantial amount of cash. There's so much you and I don't know while we gripe from the sidelines.
