Frustrated (Tax Day)

So I'm a procrastinator ... on taxes. I hate filing taxes. Hate having to sit on the computer looking at the numbers, trying to figure out why I'm either owing money or getting very little back in comparison to others.

*sigh* So last night I completed my federal taxes and nearly shot my computer. Uncle Sam says I owe $635. Unbelievable. I don't have it, wasn't expecting to have to pay anything. Guess I'll have to call the tax man and see what we can work out.

I just can't believe I owe. Here people who made more than I did are getting between $500 to over $1,000 in refunds ... plus they received that stimulus check back in June ... yet I'm owing $635, and I didn't get the stimulus check because it went to my stupid school loan.

Just a little frustrated here on tax day.

It may have to do with your withholding allowances. Might be worth talking to a tax preparer and see what you can change to avoid owing next year, or minimize it at least.

Re: Frustrated (Tax Day)

Last year I had one or two ... one for single/no dependents and the other for one job or something. I generally keep that low. I'll have to re-check my new jobs tax info to make sure I haven't withheld too much.

Low is good.

Are the people who are getting a return and making more money than you married, or have children? That makes a HUGE difference.

Apply to pay the amount out in monthly installments.

I think it is Form 9465.

If you send money in with it you are generally approved.

I'd say... send in $100 with it and request 12 monthly payments of 44.58.

I paid in plenty on federal I worked a lot of OT last year which means I paid in at a higher rate pretty often, and I got a huge amount back, well huge if you consider enough for a nice dinner out huge.

Then came the state return. My wife's job withheld NO state income tax so I owed them over $1,000. So much for the nice dinner out. Hope all those leaches have plenty because they are sucking me dry.

Thanks for the info. Next year better be good. Last year i was married, but we filed separately (she got money back, I owe) and this year ... in a few weeks actually ... we're having our first addition to our family. Ava is due May 23rd.

Does anyone know that there is no federal law requiring one to "legally" pay taxes?
One does it voluntarily!

True!!!

Yes sir... that is the truth.

But... I will pay my $436 dollars this year because even though there is no law... those who "enforce" the non law are convinced that there is one and so I would be right to not file. But... being right in jail is not helpful to the goal of feeding & clothing my family.
