1 Corinthians 14:34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.
35And if they will learn any thing,
let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
36What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
37If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
Paul, when writing to Timothy, also had this commandment to the Corinthians that he had given, and he wrote other things concerning the conduct of women in public worship. Women are not permitted to speak in the public meeting, in the form of instruction or teaching, however, we know they are allowed to pray or prophesy outloud, from
1 Corinthians 11:5, and singing and such things are permitted. I am not a legalist either, in that I don't believe a woman can't whisper something to someone sitting next to her. However, a woman is not permitted from this passage and various other passages, to teach, or to serve in the office of a deacon, elder or bishop.
The tradition of allowing ministers wives to teach, as happens in some UPC churches- especially on Mother's Day, is completely unbiblical, and trangresses the commandment given by Paul.
