In this situation, given her position and the fact that he was in uniform and not just holding door for a lady leaving the grocery store or something, he was wrong.
He was addressing an United States Senator!

He should have known better.
Now, I suggest that you correct your self righteousness and apologize to the Senator (via email) for attempting to correct her when she was correct from the get go.
That Senator was polite-- but many read their own prejudices into the situation.
I don't like Senator Boxer, but she was right in correcting him.
Maybe she could have done so in private, but had I not addressed him properly, you can believe that I would receive an "on-the-spot" correction and it probably would have not been polite.
