we can see all too well how diverse the UPC is becoming. interesting that you would say not everyone, meaning apostolics? you? must be Oneness Pentecostal, exactly what does that mean? would you care to share?

now let me say I don't think only UPC is going to make it into heaven, I don't but... that doesn't go without saying that I do believe that there is only one Lord, one baptism.

Melody, I already called out Eureka for this post on the other thread it was on. I think the view he puts forth here is more than a minority view within the UPC it is an extremely minority view.

The vast majority of UPC saints and even a bigger percentage of UPC preachers do not believe non Oneness people are making it to heaven. Most don't believe people not adhering to the clothesline legalsim are making it either.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Quote from Ethel Goss (widow of 1st UPC Gen Supt. Howard Goss) book "The Winds of God"

now let me say I don't think only UPC is going to make it into heaven, I don't but... that doesn't go without saying that I do believe that there is only one Lord, one baptism.

One Lord, One Faith and One Baptism - I affirm. That does not mean there is no diversity in how we experience Christ.

It is no secret that Oneness Pentecostals have differing views as do Trinitarians. We know this, yet we also know none of us has it ALL right. It is nothing less than our faith in Christ that covers our sins - including some less than perfect theologies.

God knows the condition of all humanity's hearts. He knows who is in Christ and who is simply an impostor. It is not often that easy for us - be they Oneness or otherwise.

As to salvation, and who will be spared damnation, I find it refreshing that many OP's have become more accepting of their fellow Christians. In many respects this is simply returning to the "Old Paths". Our Oneness Pentecostal tradition had lots of room for tolerance on the issue and many ways of expressing the same. While the UPC many indeed have narrowed it's definitions a bit, I do not believe things are much different in practice now.

Here are some interesting statements and quotes not given much press in the last few decades. It helps put things in perspective and gives confidence to those seeking out those "Old Paths".

Many have held that the "Bride of Christ" was something “separate and special."

Howard Goss the first UPC General Superintendent believed in the "light" doctrine, and stated "I have not and do not teach that a person will go to hell if he has not been baptized with the Holy Spirit"

W T Witherspoon assistant General Superintendent of the UPC wrote "they that have not been taught concerning the Bible New Birth but have thoroughly repented and lived what they know of the Christian life will be on the right hand at the white throned Judgment..." and will be "Delegated to the Kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world".

G T Haywood Taught there were "levels of status in the Kingdom of God".

S G Norris taught the Holy, Righteous, and Wicked" the "Righteous" were to inhabit the new earth.

Ralph Reynolds made a distinction between those who were "begotten" and those who were "born again."

Frank Ewart wrote about parting with his dear friend when the Oneness camp left the AG. "But despite all these things our love for each other survived, and this divine love will be renewed in glory where we will all see eye to eye and doctrinal differences will never again intrude."

It is also interesting to note that in 1995 the UPC changed their articles of faith from "repentance and conversion" to simply "repentance". There was debate by some that repentance alone was not "conversion" and the 50 year document needed to be amended. Sad.

I am a firm believer in the Old Paths

Articles on such subjects as "The New Birth," will be accepted, whether they teach that the new birth takes place before baptism in water and Spirit, or that the new birth consists of baptism of water and Spirit. - THE PENTECOSTAL HERALD Dec. 1945

"It is doubtful if any Trinitarian Pentecostals have ever professed to believe in three gods, and Oneness Pentecostals should not claim that they do." - Daniel Segraves

Wow, maybe you are just too liberal Sister Alvear. After all, you go out into the jungles of a foreign country and lead people to Jesus. Plus, you're a woman.

Sis Alvear,

Some of them may not mean that the way it sounds. They probably have limited budgets and so they devote what they can give in their missionary budgets to those who are approved by the UPC. They may have monthly amounts allotted to foreign missions and cannot afford to have a visitor and the added expense of someone who is outside an already tight budget. They may have to draw the line somewhere and just choose to draw the line along organizational lines.

Also, everyday our church website receives requests for support and partnership from random missionaries and pastors from all over the world. Some undoubtedly are as legit and sincere and worthy as Sis A...some undoubtedly are not. Supporting the missionaries that we are familiar with, who have been vetted by people we know, and are accountable to people we have a real relationship with helps avoid mismanaging our missions funds and sowing into a scam.

I'm sure that the UPC churches who do support Sis. A, do so because they are familiar with her and her works.
I also get emails weekly from someone who wants to come in and preach or do something with the youth or have a "prophecy workshop" or any number of other things.
