Again, he was absolutely wrong for writing the email - it's detesting what he wrote. But there's no law against being stupid ... or even racist. Ask Gates.
The officer should be suspended indefinitely without pay and required to take courses on profiling and race relations. And he may need to submit to his record being reviewed over the next year. But he shouldn't be forced out of his job simply because the Mayor or PD wants to look tough in light of the Gates controversy.
JMO ... likely not the most popular one, I know.

He made statements regarding how he would have handled the situation and what his attitude about race is. That alone is grounds for dismissal, IMO. To keep him on the force is asking for trouble.
