Its a fair question. My answer is this. The grocery store. Look, the way our conviction stands, is that we dont want to be around drinking itself. You cant avoid the grocery store, but you can avoid the liquor aisle. If they hold a wine tasting event at the grocery store, I most certainly wont be going there that day. We are never around drinking, at all. I'll be honest, if there was a grocery store that didnt sell liquour, I would definitely be shopping there. I just dont ever go down the liquor aisle at the store. I avoid alcohol as much as is humanly possible.
Our conviction is based off of the scripture in Proverbs.
(Proverbs 23:20 KJV) Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
If you look at that in plain english, it says not to be around people that are drinking. Its pretty clear. A winebibber is one who drinks wine. The original greek word for winebibber is oinopotēs.
oino: wine
potēs: drinker
The Bible says not to be around people who drink wine....or alcohol, if you please.
Because of what the Bible says, we refuse to be around it. I dont know how to explain this, but there is such a spirit in alcohol. I believe the devil really giggles at how an Apostolic has no problem walking into a place that serves wine "and spirits". Why do they add the word "spirits"? I know the secular reason for it, but I believe that spiritually, its the devil making a mockery of how dangerous alcohol really is. I have no wish to be around liquor or that spirits that inhabit it.
Alcohol is the only drug ever specifically mentioned in scripture and it is ignored by the Apostolic church. It bothers me a lot. The Bible has some extremely harsh words for alcohol, those who drink it, those who serve it, and those who are around it. Our family's position is just that since God had such strong language condemning alcohol, we want nothing to do with it, nor be around it. Is it a sacrifice? Very much so and yes sometimes its hard, but I just want the Lord to be pleased with where I go and what I do. I somehow cant see the Lord walking into an Old Chicago with its 110 brews, after He said things like this...
"Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." - Proverbs 20:1
"Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh" - Proverbs 23:20
"Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine." - Proverbs 23:29-30
"Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright." - Proverbs 23:31
That last one really gets me. The Lord said not to even LOOK at alcohol when it is red and when it moveth itself aright. That means it is fermented and alcoholic. Liquor, booze. You get the picture.
The Lord said not to even look at it, much less sit at the same table with it, or in the same restaurant with it. To me, according to the Bible, the Lord has a very harsh stringent view of alcohol and how we should NOT approach it. I'll be honest, it scares me to think that the Lord said not to even LOOK at alcohol.
When the Lord says not to even look upon it, not to be around people who partake of it, proclaims that it gives woe, condemns anyone who serves it (Habbakuk 2:15)...................I will tell you what, I dont want any part of it or even to be around it. When the Lord speaks so strongly on something, it means that it is important to Him. I just dont want to displease the Lord. I hope that makes sense.......
