It always struck me as ironic that we harp on modesty so much, and yet one definition of modest is 'not drawing attention to yourself' or 'not ostentatious'. And yet Pentecostals are some of the most flamboyant dressers on the planet.

I always bring up the spectacle that is the Annual Family Camp. Despite all the rhetoric about modesty, many of the women (and men) wear clothing worthy of a Hollywood red carpet premier.

So I do not believe that most styles of clothing ate inherently sinful.... What IS sinful is the piousness of those who bask in their "humbleness" while doing EVERYTHING to draw attention to themselves. And is what I find personally grating.

And then when the explanation for why we don't wear jewelry is because we don't believe in adorning our bodies?!? Uh, no. I don't think so. There was no way I was going to give that explanation to anyone when they could look around and see all of the adorning that we do.

I know women who spend hours on their hairdos, over $200 on a dress, $200 on a purse.... and then tilt their noses in the air over people who wear wedding bands.

Consistency is a wonderful thing.

Yes, and this stuff really does violate what Paul was teaching, but no one seems to care?

I don't know where you people hung out all of your lives, but this just isn't exactly true!

On the planet, AQP? I love ya, girl, but this just is not true! LOL!

Not directing this at either of you, but I remember many posts where we have been criticized for having long, stringy ponytails, looking like a wash woman, etc.

Which is it? You can't have it both ways? Do you want us to look like trash bags or can we buy our clothes at Nordstrom's, Macy's, etc.? Ya'll are cracking me up!

I'm going to go put in my Bubba teeth!

You can have it both ways because both are true depending on the circumstances. At camps, I found it was usually the women who were husband hunting and men looking for a trophy that brought out the worst in flamboyant-ness. Or some women trying to out compete others in a game that has been played for thousands and thousands of years, and most often seen in the ranks of the rich and powerful. And it is usually only seen at large gatherings where people are trying to make impressions on those that they would rarely run across otherwise.
