He just does not disagree with me, but disagrees with the bible. But I know I would enjoy friendship with him in person.

What if you discerned that Timmy would be a great addition to your board as it fits the description of the board? What if he possessed every quality necessary with the exception that you mentioned?

This is not a business board. I want people who sincerely trust in Jesus and believe in the bible. I am not just talking about good people. It's what the bible speaks of as elders. I think board members are church elders. Diakonate. And the bible is clear about them.

1 Timothy 3:9 KJV Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

Why not have a pastor who does not believe in the bible, then. (Oh,.... that does exist in mainline denominations. Sorry. )

BTW, got your card today! Thanks bro. Wonderful family!

Re: Would You Put Timmy On Your Church Board?

I like Timmy a lot, and would love to have coffee sometime. But I don't really see the point of having him on the board of a church. He doesn't even have any interest in attending a church any more, as far as I can tell. A church has a purpose, and Timmy's not especially on board for its purpose. So what's the point?

Re: Would You Put Timmy On Your Church Board?

We have people on different boards or commitees in our church.

If they want to be a paart of what we are doing we put them to work.

A man who serves as head of our compassion ministry, delegating charitable contributions into our community, helping both womens crisis center and mens shelter

Many of you wouldn't touch him. he smokes. Well he was smoking when he started this minisrty. He has succesfully quit smoking now for close to a year.

I recently had a 58 yr old man read from the word, from the pulpit, a selected reading from Psalms. He at that time was still smoking and i had recently spent an all nighter with him, as he had relapsed into a meth addiction.
Many of you wouldn't touch him as he is a 4 yr graduate of a UPC bible school, backslid , divorced, remarried looser.

But God didn't let me pick who I would reach out to, so I continue to minister God's love to guys like this...and today he is doing better, much better and hopes one day to have a ministry helping others who struggle with addictions.

We have had two women on our church board, whose counsel we have appreciated in making financial decisions.

The question remains would we have Timmy on our board. Timmy professes to be agnostic or whatever and although I appreciate Timmy's wit and wisdom, if Timmy came to our church and continued to NOT profess Christ we probably not have him on our church board.

But say Timmy did come to my church and had a talent in contracing and building and was willing to help us in a new building for example. We would welcome Timmys councel on these matters.

That's a good point. It may depend on the purpose of the board in question. If the board is strictly and irrevocably limited to the business dealings of the church, then what do ya say?

Re: Would You Put Timmy On Your Church Board?

Are there biblical requirements for people to hold church positions?

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.
