IF you believe your wife is beautiful, the correct answer is:

"Honey, YOU look beautiful in ANYthing." (And don't add any clauses, like, "...but that isn't my favorite style.")

If she asks again, you say, "I think you are gorgeous."

This is where she will and does ask again.... again.... and again.... Once the conversation gets to this point, you (as a guy) are screwed.

And if she asks again, you say, "It doesn't matter whether I like your dress or not, you are the most beautiful woman in my life!"

And she will ask again. You can say "You are beautiful!" in the most glowing terms possible at which point she will respond with "So you DO think I'm fat!!". See above.

Get the picture?

These are usually no-win situations in most cases when a woman is unhappy about her appearance in any ways whether it be her hair or something she is wearing.

What was more important, as far as ethics go? Making sure you expressed your opinion about the dress? Or making sure your wife understood that you think she's beautiful?

I think it's completely unfair to ask a husband if you look fat in a certain outfit.

My husband is often point blank truthful. If he feels like he will hurt my feelings about something, he changes the subject or starts darting his eyes. But, he doesn't lie to me about stuff like that......And I don't ask!!

On the flip side, I can be pretty brutally honest too. I guess we value honesty over hurt feelings.
