Here's a better translation - it has to do with pride - not being plain.
1 Timothy 2:9 (Today's New International Version)
9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
Thank you.

Sad that this is a reason - - and I'm not saying it's bad - - just sad that we tend to live our lives to please others at times.
I have a relative that lives life based not on her convictions but on what other church folks might think. Every thought is a fear of " what if a church person .....". (this is an ulta con UPC church)
Truly there is no freedom to live, which does make it very sad.

I fight that all the time . Truth is most live in FEAR of what people in church will say and Oh boy if they tell the Pastor.......... then what. I mean if someone sees you doing or wearing something they deem not Christian and they run and tell the Pastor.

That is NOT what being a saved Christian should be about. So sad!

So on a serious note , I have heard 1 Tim 2:9 quoted to prove the wrongness of makeup, I guess what I am asking is what does shamefacedness mean ?
According to Strong's, it means:
"...(through the idea of downcast eyes); bashfulness, that is, (towards men), modesty or (towards God) awe: - reverence, shamefacedness."
Looks like it has more to do with modest attitude/behavior than anything else.

My husband and I were discussing this the other day. We were discussing some "trouble" we were having with one of our kids, and then realized that the only reason it was an issue was because we were trying to force other people's convictions on our kids. I long to one day truly live free of fear.
I've heard it taught.... 'how can you be shamefaced, and wear stuff to enhance your eyes, face, lips, etc?' But that same logic should be applied to shaping your eyebrows, curling your eyelashes, or even fixing your hair in a way that suits your face the best... if you're going to use that logic.
I believe there is a huge difference between wanting to look your best, and having a forward spirit. The most flagrant case of adultery I ever knew about (multiple offenses in a short time frame), were committed by a woman who never wore makeup, not even lip gloss.
