Which is more important?

There are two objectives of holiness dress standards that somewhat conflict with each other.

1. Modesty

2. Gender distinction

Now, I do understand that it is possible to obey both at the same time, but you have to admit, taking one or the other to an extreme would be counterproductive to the other. I guess, even in the wacky world of the UC, there is a need for balance!

But, if it came down to it, which of these is more important? Is it better to appear genderless (from what you wear, that is) or to look, ahem, overly "attractive" (to the opposite gender, that is)?

Or should I have said "Is it less bad ..."?

If men would just all have facial hair, we could rely on that for gender distinction

I don't buy the question. It's set-up as an either/or in a hypothetical. I won't even court a question like that, which starts off with false choices.

Anyone else?

Re: Which is more important?

I don't accept the premise of the question either...... however, it doesn't mean I haven't thought about similar questions. For instance, do SOME women have to "ugly up" lest they lead men into carnal thoughts? If Christina Hendricks started attending a church run by a UC pastor, would he make her wear a winter coat (or mans snowmobile suit) at all times?

How many here know who Christina Hendricks is? I could post a picture and you would know what I am talking about.....

Re: Which is more important?

OK, so the premise isn't getting wide acceptance.

But, what's not to accept? Is it the two goals, themselves? (Pretty sure they have both been given here on AFF, and not just by UCs.) Or do you think the goals aren't somewhat in conflict with each other? Note, I said somewhat. I also said it's possible to achieve both goals. But isn't it worth considering that there is, in fact, a balancing act going on?

And I just thought it was interesting to think about which goal is more important. To expand on the modesty goal, a bit:

An underlying assumption here, it seems, is that the more skin showing, the less "modest" one is dressed. But also, the more shape that shows through, even if the skin is covered, the less modest one is -- at least some "shapes". Nobody would think a woman whose only "clothing" is a 1/4 inch layer of paint, head to toe, is modest! But the gender distinction goal is 100% met, with flying colors! (And that's with bifurcated paint, even! )

Yeah. I do tend to bring up extremes, don't I?
