It just seems logical to me. He defines what she is wearing, thereby, revealing that he feels she is not in a place of commitment to their marriage. We don't know where they are emotionally at this point. Perhaps he referenced that as a point of spiraling down. Who knows? It seemed to be an important event that affected him greatly enough to mention it. It could have been a turning point, but not divorce ready at that point.
