Re: Isaiah 3 and jewelry...

I think it boils down the the word "not" and if it's literal or not.

For example:

1 Cor 1:17

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect
KJV

Would it have been wrong for Paul to baptize sinec God sent him not to baptize??

The verse does say modest apparel

1 Timothy 2:9
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

1 Timothy 2:9 (New Living Translation)

9 And I want women to be modest in their appearance.[a] They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes.

1 Timothy 2:9 (English Standard Version)
9likewise also(A) that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,

1 Timothy 2:9 (Contemporary English Version)
9I would like for women to wear modest and sensible clothes. They should not have fancy hairdos, or wear expensive clothes, or put on jewelry made of gold or pearls.

1 Timothy 2:9 (Young's Literal Translation)

9in like manner also the women, in becoming apparel, with modesty and sobriety to adorn themselves, not in braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or garments of great price,

Its pretty standard across all translations

onefaith do you know what that word "modest" means here?

So if you believe the text is self-defining the word as "decent, appropriate, not drawing attention" -- what does this mean to you? Does a denim skirt in a swimming hole seem appropriate? Does it draw attention? Fancy hairdos? Pioneer/LSD-Fundamentalist styles?

I understand Timothy is speaking to a specific issue here when giving these instruction for how the people show be at worship.

I also want to point this to the greater meaning behind the word "modest." Nowhere do we get a doctrine to wear short sleeve shirts, avoid shorts and not wear tank tops (ahem, rdp).
What defines "costly array"?

What's costly for some may be a drop in the bucket for others.

Modest:

kosmios
kos'-mee-os
From G2889 (in its primary sense); orderly, that is, decorous: - of good behaviour, modest.

Decorous, as in "decoration"?!

The opposite of decorous would be "gaudy".

Modest does not mean "draby", "plain", "lowly" or "abstinence".

James was pretty clear about how to treat people in rich apparel versus those in non rich apparel. There is a difference. Its not from personal perspective.

Actually if Paul was an apostle, Christ did send him to baptize

Matthew 28:19
Mark 16:16

Paul is referring to the disunity among them concerning WHO baptized them, not that baptism was not important to Paul.. on the contrary it was

Acts 19:1-7

However to use this argument against NOT meaning do not in the scripture does not apply because there is no where Jesus told his disciples TO wear jewelry.

You still didn't touch the definition of modesty.

i don't need to. We have conscious and conviction for that. Our conscious knows what is right and what is not modest. God simply moves the speaker or man of God to point that out when we ignore what our conscious already is telling us.

have you never heard someone say, when I first put that on I felt horrible, but I got used to it.
