I think it boils down the the word "not" and if it's literal or not.
For example:
1 Cor 1:17
17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect

Would it have been wrong for Paul to baptize sinec God sent him not to baptize??
