AFF is one of the most entertaining places on the web.

Re: How to Save Money

Now is the time to buy Christmas decorations, Christmas cards, wrapping paper etc.!!

I probably won't buy much right now, but if I needed it, I would. I have enough for the most part. I will wait until the "real" clearancing happens....when the store pretty much wants to get rid of it. Like after halloween I got some halloween leftovers for .10 each or so....a shirt, some halloween make-up, candy etc. I love "leftover" sales. They will practically pay you to take it. But, if there is anything you really want or need to get, now is the time because it might not be there later.

I will hit the clearance racks diligently from now until shortly after super bowl Sunday, when things like clothes take a real dive.

Re: How to Save Money

I added up my Christmas totals, which I do yearly, just to make myself feel good.

We spent about a total of $521.78 on Christmas. I also total the would be prices of what we would have spent, had we spent full cost on everything. This total was $1127.82 for a difference of $606.04. This was presents for a total of 15 people. Obviously, we spent more for our immediate family than for others. We paid full cost for these items: A Red Lobster gift certificate $25.00. $100.00 in cash to my husband for something he wants but I don't feel qualified to buy. (building materials) $100.00 for some special mittens for me for Raynauds. I don't think we paid full price for anything else. We had a very nice Christmas.

If you want to save money like this you need to start shopping now for next year. Unfortunately, many people are overextended and are trying to catch up after Christmas. In order to get this turned around, you need to find a little extra money here and there or the cycle doesn't end. Can you spend an extra $3.00 every time you shop for little clearance doodads throughout the year? Think how much you will save in the long run and then make your own "money saved" list next year to show yourself how well you did and then brag to your spouse. They will buy in when they see the totals!

Re: How to Save Money

I plan on hitting the stores tomorrow looking for clearenced Christmas items. It would be great to load up on 5-6 years worth of wrapping paper and maybe some outdoor decorations as well, although I am not expecting to save a whole lot on them since stores tend to ship them back to their warehouses for next year rather then put 50-70% off stickers on them.

Hmm, in my experience you can find some great deals on outdoor decorations, unless you are looking for something very specific. I guess part of it is keeping an open mind about decorating with what you see rather than having what you want in your mind and then going to get it. (Not saying you are not open minded....just pointing out a tactic for buying.)

Re: How to Save Money

Yeah, I need to start looking now for indoor decorations. And containers to keep them in. Love my pre-lit fiber optic tree.

I like mine too but my husband isn't thrilled with it. But I bought it thinking he wanted one!! He wants one that spins.

I could use some more bins and shelves to put them on. Not sure how many I will buy this year but I have been thinking about it. Lots of that type of stuff goes on sale now too.

Re: How to Save Money

What are you doing to save money while keeping your house warm?

Are you putting plastic on the windows?

Have you installed a thermostat that automatically turns down at night?

Are you running a humidifier (better for your health and feels warmer)?

Do you keep your drapes closed at night?

Re: How to Save Money

I'm in the process of making very heavy winter curtains out of denim for the winter. I haven't quite finished that task yet. I keep blinds and curtains closed at night, have a programmable thermostat and two kitty-heaters... if the heat is turned down the cats snuggle next to me and my lap or bed stays very warm. The way one of them eats though, I haven't decided if he is an energy efficient or cost effective heating device or not, though. Rugs on the hardwood floors, book cases and other heavy furniture on the outer walls (a full book case on an outer wall is the equivalent of an additional 4"-7" of insulation). I added blown insulation to the attic two years ago, and that was well worth the investment.

I also wear sweaters and socks rather than lighter weight clothes in the house, add blankets to the bed, make sure the windows are caulked, and keep my bed away from outer walls since those are cooler. I haven't turned on the humidifier yet--need to do that tonight. On colder days I also run a space heater in the room I'm in rather than heating the whole house.
