Did you read..........

A Catcher in the Rye?

It was banned at both our public library and our school library here. I got a copy of it and started to read it, but my mother caught me and took the book away. So I never did read it.

How about you? Did you read it?

I see that J.D. Salinger died today. That's what made me curious. Am I the only one who was deprived?

Re: Did you read..........

Originally published for adults, it has since become popular with adolescent readers for its themes of alienation and rebellion.[1] It has been translated into almost all of the world's major languages.[2] Around 250,000 copies are sold each year, with total sales of more than sixty-five million.[3] The novel's protagonist and antihero, Holden Caulfield, has become an icon for teenage rebellion.[4]

The novel was among the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005 as chosen by Time,[5] and named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. It has been frequently challenged[6][7][8] in the United States for its liberal use of profanity and portrayal of sexuality and teenage angst. It also deals with complex issues of identity, belonging, connection, and alienation.

Re: Did you read..........

I think I read it in high school, but can't remember for sure. I know we read Lord of the Flies. I never could really get past the language to the heart of that one. I'm fairly sure Catcher would be the same. We had a good English teacher, but I chose most my own books. Pride and Prejudice, The Scarlet Letter, and Crime and Punishment were probably my favorites.

Re: Did you read..........

The strong language in Catcher in the Rye is pervasive, making it hard to read, and taking it completely off the list for my children, despite it's recommendation as a "classic" on most book lists. However, I have it in .pdf format if you want it, Margie.
