Blood Test for Depression

I always knew that some forms of depression are physical in nature rather then attacks from SATAN.

But even I was thrown for a loop by this story (in a good way).

Scientists develop first blood test to diagnose depression

Scientists say they have developed the first blood test to diagnose major depression in teenagers. The test is also able to differentiate between at least two subtypes of depression: major depression and major depression combined with anxiety disorder.

Currently, doctors and psychiatrists diagnose depression solely by relying on the patient to recount his or her own symptoms. Then, the doctor must interpret the patient’s descriptions to decide whether or not the patient is depressed.

Re: Blood Test for Depression

I knew 10 years ago that scientists were working on a blood test for depression, much in the same way they can test for bipolar lithium levels. I am glad to see that it is finally a reality.

But, what I would like to see ..treatment wise is for physicians to incorporate good nutrition of whole foods and exercise into the treatment plan. In this day of processed boxed foods, people do not realize that they are not getting nourishment from the foods they eat. That will do much to help alleviate the suffering of depression. But am I cynical to think that maybe they do not what natural healing so they can push high priced medications off on the people to make a buck?

Is it not beyond the healthcare community to withhold effective treatment that includes nutrition so that they can have a consistent return paying customer?

Re: Blood Test for Depression

For me it is about taking ammo away from those who say it is simply "in your head!" (although in a certain literal way, it is) or that it is "an attack from SATAN!".

I've never, nor will I ever, obsess about food and it only being organic and/or sold in a brown box. That isn't to say I cannot eat healthier than I do but to be quite honest, Coke makes me very happy.

EXERCISE is the greatest natural remedy for depression there is. When I was hitting the gym 4-5 times a week, my outlook on life was MUCH better -and I still ate junk!

You hit the nail on the head, imo. Our Dr.s have all been trained into a symptom relief system by a nefarious (at best) bunch, and most just can't afford to have the heart of T2W.

90% + of depressives here are Omega3 and VitaminD deficient; which should make one pretty much suicidal. Other dietary changes will take up most of the rest of the slack.

Wadr, most depressives lie to themselves wholesale. I ask for a survey of what they eat for a week, get back this whole-food survey, as they walk in eating a twinkie...

Of course there are (possibly) depressives with some "chemical imbalance," maybe, 1% (prolly just a diff deficiency)--but I would run from any establishment test for depression.

Yup--exercise will take care of the rest. You simply cannot be depressed when your endorphins are right.

Eat enough "pink slime," though, and I'm guessing you'll eventually spend lots on food (and zip on Dr.s, insurance, hospitals...)--but I have a friend like you, exercise monster, total junk food addict, lol.

Hmm; we might possibly have a renewed conversation about "witchcraft," here pretty soon...in about a year, maybe...

My opening postulate will be "Are you eating something you can't pronounce?"

Re: Blood Test for Depression

For some of us, the lack of minerals and coenzymes won't keep one's serotonin in balance.
Some of us were so mineral deficient that it takes both good nutrition and exercise. I think that exercise plays a big role in it. I can always tell that I sleep better after a good brisk walk.

Re: Blood Test for Depression

Nearly every health food nut I have ever known have looked anything BUT healthy. Either they had no energy and/or their faces were sunken in as well as being just plain weird. But I have known MANY (from the gym, or job, or just life) that ate all manner of <gasp> processed foods and both looked and felt healthy. We would work out on a Friday then hit a pizza place after wards and drinks after that. Some even smoked (a little)! One guess as to which group were happier......

Again, exercise was the common denominator. Lord, I need to start doing this again, we have a North-rim to South-rim Grand Canyon hike coming up in a few months!
