Pro 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
This verse does not come with a promise that it will always work. It's an observation. I think it's true for the most part. The things parents emphasize the most to their children will be the things they do not depart from. I think that's true, but I think oftentimes parents don't realize how emphasis on a particular point may actually cause the child to diverge from their worldview. For example, apostolics teach a love for truth. I've heard many times an apostolic say I love the truth. But, if the point gets across to the child that the important part is about truth then when the child is older and leaves his parents church he may actually be doing it because he loves the truth (at least in his eyes). Just something to think about
Proverbs 22:1A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. Proverbs 22:2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all. Proverbs 22:3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished. Proverbs 22:4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life. Proverbs 22:5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them. Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Better, Sandy?
The best parallel I can think of is this:
If you were raised in a loving and respectful home, how often, in raising your kids or even working with others' children, have you said something and then realized "Wow. I sound just like my mother!" or "Oh, wow. That sounds like something Dad would have said!"?

Oh, all the time! No, seriously! What? Why are you laughing?

Here is one for you all, just what exactly does the following verse mean.
Pro 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Just what are we to train our children in that they won't depart from it? Doctrines of our church? Or the basic fundementals of being a good citizen, right from wrong. Not the so called standards of our church.
The Word of God.

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:
There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
Every sinner must repent of their sins.
That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.
See all my life I only heard verse 6 quoted and it was preached if we raised our children in the UPCI with all its standards etc that when they grew up they would stay in UPCI. As if this was some special formula to keep our children in the beleif that we keep to be true.
Oh good grief. Well here is a UPCI differing view. I NEVER heard it preached or taught that this verse taught us that we are to raise our children "In the UPCI with all its standards etc etc and that when we grew up we would stay IN the UPCI"

The point being how some old time Pentecostal preachers and some not so old time preachers will take a verse out of context and preach what they are trying to get accross instead of preaching the word plain and simple.

Jesus said,
John 14:6
{14:6} Jesus saith
unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man
cometh unto the Father, but by me.
I vote we raise up our children to have a living relationship with Jesus, the one who is the way. Teaching them doctrines (while it is important) and traditions (like those found in the UPCI) will not save them. Give them Jesus.
