And it's a good one, too. Not like some of those other signs.

Bolded...I don't believe so at all. That certainly wasn't the case for me. I was trying my best to do what was right, what was required, and what would give me "power". In a VERY authentic way, I was giving it my best shot. I wanted desperately to fit in to be as saved as everyone else, and then later, as "filled" as everyone else.
So scripturally, if those who do not speak in tongues have available to them a spiritually healthy, productive, overcoming, impacting life, what is the benefit of tongues?
Well, doing it to fit in is certainly not a good motivation. In fact, I think it's sin
Do you not believe you were authentically speaking in tongues? Do you doubt your own experiences now looking back?
The benefit of tongues... great question. If we're talking tongues that only edify one's self, the benefit would be only of some sort of special intimacy with God. It's not so much that tongues benefit us, as the Spirit does -- and for some reason, tongues is what that looks like sometimes.
So Socialite, how long could I have posted on this thread in the fashion I am and not been completely thrashed by now, in the old days when the right-wingers were here? Heck, you couldn't have even gotten away with what you've said!

Thanks for turning my heart after God into sin, you bum. Look, when tongues are about 98% of the religious culture you're in and it's hell without tongues, the natural reaction is to adapt to the surroundings.
Do you not believe you were authentically speaking in tongues? Do you doubt your own experiences now looking back?
No, I do not believe they were authentic, I know they weren't. I was doing the best I could with what I had, but it was memorized gibberish. I don't my experiences with God, but the tongues, yes...much more than doubt.

And I have the kind of intimacy with God that I never dreamed of before. I've been attending church since I was 5 days old and I feel like a new convert.
It's not so much that tongues benefit us, as the Spirit does -- and for some reason, tongues is what that looks like sometimes.
But not always, and for some, never. And yes, it is the Spirit that benefits us and I'd much rather that manifest itself through me as I live on mission to reach those around me, in my neighborhoods, stores, golf course, relationships, etc. That's when I need the Spirit working through me the most.
We do not tempt God by going to drink deadly things. However, if we drink deadly things, his word says it will not harm us.
It's similar to "He will give his angels charge over you to bear you in all your ways lest you dash your foot against a stone."
The devil tried to use that scripture to have Jesus jump from the mountain, but Jesus replied "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."
So, although, God has promised to protect us if we drink deadly things, that doesn't mean we should go ahead tempting God by intentionally drinking deadly things. The same thing applies to picking up serpents...

If you seek some arbitrary experience called tongues then you will find some arbitrary experience and call it tongues.
If you seek some emotional experience where weird sounds come out of your mouth then you will find some emotional experience where weird sounds come out of your mouth.
You will find what you seek... and if you have no clue what you are seeking other than what you have seen others do in a pentecostal worship service then you will find what you have seen others do in a pentecostal worship service.

You don't believe the gift of tongues exist today?

I don't see any scriptural support for tongues being so much more widespread than every other spiritual gift. Isn't it interesting that so many people seem to have the faith for one spiritual gift but hardly no one has the faith for any other spiritual gift?

WOW!! Great post! And the most interesting part is...and you're probably aware of this....is that the quotation, "See and you will find" is when Jesus was referring to the Holy Spirit and that passage ends with, "If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him." (Luke 11:13)
