What does "moderate" and "excess" mean? Is there some universal standard or is it an individual thing? It seems like one persons moderation can be another persons excess, or the other way around.

That is hard to tell...ya know... One drink for one person would throw them back several feet and then they would have to fight alcoholism. For others, it would be no big deal because it doesn't consume them.... This is wear, like in everything else, people have to be honest with themselves and they need to know what they can and cannot handle...

This is precisely the reason grape juice is offered - so those who've once battled alcohol addiction can take the grape juice instead. There are some in the church who cannot have any alcohol, even the tiny amount offered in communion, and we want them to still be able to take communion with us.

I think moderation moreso than none. The thing is some people may think they can handle the moderate and can't. My husband is OCD with every thing that he does and it wouldn't be worth the chance to me.
I have a friend that gets irrate when her husband has a drink with friends. Yet, she thinks it is okay for him to have a drink with her. It doesn't make sense to me.
We use grape juice for communion.

I agree! We don't know who may have a problem with just that one sip of alcohol.

Why would anyone want to drink something that tastes so bad.

Maybe they have an interest in renting a moderate buzz?
