Dear Washington Post,

As a Pentecostal pastor, theologian and educator, I am disappointed by Pat Oliphant’s recent cartoon that ridicules Pentecostal beliefs and practices and portrays God in a way that is blasphemous to Pentecostals as well as many other Christians. Under the First Amendment, you have a right to publish such a cartoon. Nevertheless, it displays ignorance of Pentecostal beliefs, and it expresses prejudice against Pentecostals because of their religious identity. It is a clear example of bigotry. Although you likewise have a constitutional right to publish a racist cartoon or a cartoon ridiculing Muslims, I do not think you would do so. To be consistent with your own standards, you should apologize.

Sincerely,
David K. Bernard

Here's one that someone wrote:

I found your cartoon disgusting and very poor taste. Not only did you insult Mrs. Palin's beliefs but you insulted God. Try an insult like that against the Muslim religion if you dare.

I think that's fine for an individual to write in and express their feelings in that way. It's to be expected.

Religious leaders, IMO, need to come across in a more intelligent and professional manner.

Because it is their right to publish what they want and they are ignorant of Pentecostal beliefs.

They are not the only ones that are ignorant of that. There has been so much that has gone awry in the religious world, Swaggart, Baker, etc., that the world has lumped us all into that view.

I have said I don't find anything wrong with writing to the Publisher of any said paper, tabloid, magazine, etc.

I just think that if we are going to change the perception of Christianity we had better make a difference by our actions and words. It's more important than it has ever been.

Let's add most of our Television Evangelists to that list.

And you are right, but we still need to take a stand for what we believe and be sure we live a life that backs it up.

'cept for the reference to bigotry i think bernard's letter was better than the other two.
