Christian Tabernacle is the exploding pulpit church.... located less than ten minutes from where I reside.
Jonathan Suber was NEVER a member there. For a time he preached there often, but he was never a member

I must have misunderstood Jon's comments. It sounded like he was in between Champions and Promiseland.

He preached about once a month for a six-eight month period at CoC.

He actually had an office at Promiseland and lived in Austin at the time.

Re: Church of Champions and Christian Tabernacle

church of champions Once was a upci 1st it was northwest united penticosal church, then 2 years later changed to( church of champions) on cutten road. This church was origally started when spring tab church on 2920, quit the UPCI. now Church of champoins is like all churches once they get larger they went the way of the world also, and left the UPC. No standards.
Old spring tab , now given to son ( now preacher) James green. They changed the name to champions church also. Old spring tab church was built on holyness and hard working people early on. Now anything goes. If you like the lastest fads and fashions in religion it will be there now.

They are ok i guess, have heard alot of good and some bad.. the bad mostly coming from UPCI folks who attack him for leaving and other personality based things. Seems to be booming as far as growth.

I've been to Church of Champions. David Grisgsby is their outreach guy who i mostly interacted with. Good folks, the pastor is a bit strong in his personality.. but all things in balance a solid church thats also growing fast.

If your looking for a good church in the S.E. Houston area give my friend Mark Willhoite a try. He planted a UPCI work there a year ago and is running about 40ish. www.lifechangingchurch.info

Did the exploding pulpit event happen while he was affilliated with UPCI or after?

Blah, blah, blah...........these things have been said about us so many times over the past twenty years that I just ignore them now. They aren't true at all; people just love to say mean things when you leave their group. I seriously doubt if these churches have "NO STANDARDS". Have you been to them? Have you asked what their beliefs are? Have you talked to the pastors yourself? Then you have no right to judge them on hearsay.

Re: Church of Champions and Christian Tabernacle

Don't know anything about the other church but WH at CoC has platform standards that would put him pretty much in the middle of most UPC churches. And only got out of the UPC a couple years ago.

It wasn't until very recently that he had men with facial hair on the platform. (Like the UPC). I have never known a man with facial hair to get behind the pulpit there.

By mainstream Christian standards he is very conservative.

He himself would be inconspicuous at a UPCI conference. Clean cut, always wears suit and tie on Sunday.

So like Sherri said, "no standards"? get real.

Last I heard he was even still an ardent three stepper. But I guess in the grand scheme of things some would contend that is a recent fad or religious fashion.

Re: Church of Champions and Christian Tabernacle

I only "found" CoC because of a few vids I was watching on youtube (suber). The statement of faith is 3 step. Other than that, I can't get a feel for it. Guess I'd have to drop by. CT is just around the corner, but something about an exploding pulpit just gives me the chills. Lol.
