Re: Internet Sales Tax Passes - Senate Vote Count

With everything going wrong. Perhaps we should stop praying for our country and start praying for God to bring judgment. Enough is enough. There are too many hostile applications running now. We need God to "reboot" this system.

How about praying for Mercy instead?

Did you vote for Obama?

As I stated before, it's a myth that the playing field is slanted and unfair. Do you have a clue what it takes to have an online business? I don't think you do. I don't think you have any idea the costs associated with domain names, website hosting, virtual shopping carts, ssl certs, transaction fees, etc. The "slob in his pajamas" who has an online store, in most cases, is not making bank.

Why am I not surprised? First, you're totally for a small-business killing bill that destroyes the entrepreneurial spirit of the internet; now you praise Walmart, which is another small-business killer.

You must have voted for Obama.
I love how riled up you appear to have gotten over nothing. LOL.

If stores have to charge a sales tax for commrce, then it just fair that online stores should too. Now, I thinkin my first post I already stated that I don't like taxes to start with, but if one type business has to charge them, then so should the other. It's nonsense to think one type should get a pass on charging sales taxes just b/c they are run online instead of a storefront.

Do I know the costs of running an online business? Nope. But i would be willing to bet it isn't near as much as the guy trying to run an actual storefront and having to pay for a lease, insurance, multiple employees, pay for the products to stock the shelves, etc etc. I'm pretty sure you can get a domain name for $10 from godaddy. Or you can just run your virtual store through Amazon and then you don't need most of those "costs" you mentioned.

Walmart only "kills' small businesses that cannot adapt and survive. When mom and pop runa store and charge $20 for something that should only be $8, and Walmart sells it for $8, then mom and pop need to learn to adapt and lower prices or shut down. That my friend is what capitalism is. And if mom and pop have a specialized service or offer somethign Walmart doesn't, then they will find their niche and do well. If not, why is that Walmart's fault? Boo hoo, mom and pop ran a store for 20 year sselling overpriced groceries or goods and they had to shut down because Walmart sells things cheaper and employs more people.

There will ALWAYS be a place for the small shops and mom and pops. Walmart or other big retailers will not go to some areas. For most of us Walmart makes life better. They make shopping more affordable than most other places. Bottom line: they save me money. If someone wants my business, save me money or offer a specialized service I need to go to you for.

Obama voter? Please. Now you're just sounding like a fool. Obama and his ilk hate Walmart. Walmart refuses to unionize. (one more reason to love Wally world)

I've already stated the costs of online vs brick and mortar aren't the same, obviously...but why should it be? Why are you beating up on the "slob in his pajamas" for wanting to start somewhere and build a business. He has to start somewhere. Walmart wasn't built in a day! This bill will kill his business before he can build it enough to open a brick and mortar store.

How Walmart gets the prices is through heavy-handed tactics. They are big enough to force manufacturers to sell it their way or no way. Many manufacturers now are so bound to Walmart, that if Walmart were to pull their products and stop selling them, the manufacturers would go bankrupt.

First you beat up the "slob in his pajamas," and now you're beating up mom and pop shops? It's NOT that mom and pop over-price their goods. It's that Walmart has purchasing power and is able to dictate the selling price, unlike mom and pop.

I'm sounding like a fool? You would be surprised how much Walmart supports the Obama administration, since you obviously haven't a clue as to how Obama and Walmart benefit from each other. It wasn't just Samuel Walton's donation of $300,000 to Obama's re-election campaign, or the company's $57,000 donation (Walmart gave Romney $66,000); it's the company's position the past several years on key Obama bills.

Walmart also:
  • Lobbied for and benefited from increased minimum wage laws (these minimum wage hikes hurt small businesses and puts many out of business. Walmart, meanwhile, is able to cover the cost AND gain business from those who've had to fold up shop.)
  • Lobbied for and benefited from the Dodd Frank bill (DF allows Walmart to fix the price of their debit-card transactions, which other small businesses are unable to do)
  • Lobbied for and will benefit from the employer mandate of Obamacare (same idea as minimum wage hikes. Walmart is big enough to absorb the costs, while other small businesses are unable to)
  • Lobbied for Obama's gun control legislation (gun sales at Walmart have increased dramatically. they would have benefited from legislation requiring a certified gun retailer for sales)
  • Is currently heavily involved in lobbying for the "Marketplace Fairness Act" (the bill this thread is about)

Goodness, of course it can't adapt. How can a mom and pop order on the same supply level as a large corporation?

We are being given a false choice between corporatism and socialism. The Founding Fathers wanted both corporations and the government to be limited.

You can read Thomas Jefferson speaking on the issue:
Quote:
“I hope that we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country.”
- Thomas Jefferson
Now we are continually being controlled by the corporations, who control the banks, political pockets, and the media.

This bill doesn't level the playing field, it cuts out the small business while growing more of a global presence, having more power to leverage income inequality in this country and around the world.

Why? Because the Feds bail out the States often and the Fed can't afford to especially now with ObamaCare

Why? Because each Senator that voted for it is a representative of a State whose coffers are getting smaller and smaller.

11.4 Billion dollars is not chump change. This may also be an extended hand to the States to accept and implement Obama Care. That is how Politics work. Political favors. Tax and Spend.

"Last year, states could have collected more than $11 billion in online sales tax revenue, according to a study by the University of Tennessee." http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/...fects/2115913/

Here is the issue. A local retailer might make an annual profit of 50k. They have to collect sales tax no matter how much they make.

An Online retailer, under this bill, only has to collect taxes if they profit over 1 mill...the problem though isn't that they have to collect sales tax. The problem is they have to collect sales tax for EACH state that requires it. Collect a different sales tax for each state AND each city that adds extra sales tax on to the State.

Add to that mess the extra administrative cost of remitting that sales tax to each state and city.

That goes beyond the sales tax burden of some local ma and pa store

Many DO adapt by offering their goods online. That is why WalMart supports this bill. Is that capitalism? To crush other businesses so they can be Wally the Greeter at WalMart for min wage and no benefits? If so it sucks and needs to be changed.

So, Prax, after all the back and forth, you are now hitting on Corporatism instead of Tax Revenue, which has been the point all along?
