If stores have to charge a sales tax for commrce, then it just fair that online stores should too. Now, I thinkin my first post I already stated that I don't like taxes to start with, but if one type business has to charge them, then so should the other. It's nonsense to think one type should get a pass on charging sales taxes just b/c they are run online instead of a storefront.

Do I know the costs of running an online business? Nope. But i would be willing to bet it isn't near as much as the guy trying to run an actual storefront and having to pay for a lease, insurance, multiple employees, pay for the products to stock the shelves, etc etc. I'm pretty sure you can get a domain name for $10 from godaddy. Or you can just run your virtual store through Amazon and then you don't need most of those "costs" you mentioned.
I've already stated the costs of online vs brick and mortar aren't the same, obviously...but why should it be? Why are you beating up on the "slob in his pajamas" for wanting to start somewhere and build a business. He has to start somewhere. Walmart wasn't built in a day! This bill will kill his business before he can build it enough to open a brick and mortar store.

That my friend is what capitalism is. And if mom and pop have a specialized service or offer somethign Walmart doesn't, then they will find their niche and do well. If not, why is that Walmart's fault? Boo hoo, mom and pop ran a store for 20 year sselling overpriced groceries or goods and they had to shut down because Walmart sells things cheaper and employs more people.

There will ALWAYS be a place for the small shops and mom and pops. Walmart or other big retailers will not go to some areas. For most of us Walmart makes life better. They make shopping more affordable than most other places. Bottom line: they save me money. If someone wants my business, save me money or offer a specialized service I need to go to you for.
How Walmart gets the prices is through heavy-handed tactics. They are big enough to force manufacturers to sell it their way or no way. Many manufacturers now are so bound to Walmart, that if Walmart were to pull their products and stop selling them, the manufacturers would go bankrupt.

First you beat up the "slob in his pajamas," and now you're beating up mom and pop shops? It's NOT that mom and pop over-price their goods. It's that Walmart has purchasing power and is able to dictate the selling price, unlike mom and pop.

I'm sounding like a fool? You would be surprised how much Walmart supports the Obama administration, since you obviously haven't a clue as to how Obama and Walmart benefit from each other. It wasn't just Samuel Walton's donation of $300,000 to Obama's re-election campaign, or the company's $57,000 donation (Walmart gave Romney $66,000); it's the company's position the past several years on key Obama bills.

Walmart also:
  • Lobbied for and benefited from increased minimum wage laws (these minimum wage hikes hurt small businesses and puts many out of business. Walmart, meanwhile, is able to cover the cost AND gain business from those who've had to fold up shop.)
  • Lobbied for and benefited from the Dodd Frank bill (DF allows Walmart to fix the price of their debit-card transactions, which other small businesses are unable to do)
  • Lobbied for and will benefit from the employer mandate of Obamacare (same idea as minimum wage hikes. Walmart is big enough to absorb the costs, while other small businesses are unable to)
  • Lobbied for Obama's gun control legislation (gun sales at Walmart have increased dramatically. they would have benefited from legislation requiring a certified gun retailer for sales)
  • Is currently heavily involved in lobbying for the "Marketplace Fairness Act" (the bill this thread is about)
