Who is going to sincerely turn without having an awareness that they need to? That has nothing to do with someone who refuses to turn.

I'm just not sure why this is part of the discussion. If we weren't aware/acknowledge (accept) our sins then we wouldn't repent.
If you want to add "acknowledge" as the first step of FOUR, but I don't see aware/acknowledge the same as repenting.
Lord, I'm a lowly sinner I acknowledge I have made mistakes and need to make a change in my life
is completely different than,
Lord, I'm a lowly sinner, I acknowledge I have made mistakes and need to make a change in my life. Now, that I understand I need you, will you forgive me?
