Daniel and John the Revelator both spoke into a context that was already in existence and used symbolism that was relevant to their contemporary audiences and had already been relevant for centuries.
For example, here are a lion with the wings of an eagle and the head of a man and its companion, an ox with the wings of an eagle and the head of a man. These are copies in this picture but the originals were colossal statutes which dated to the Ninth Century B.C.
