Hi MikeB,
Since you have once again found the time and interest to discuss the Biblical concept of death and resurrection allow me to point out a few things to you:
20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they
lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
20:5 But the rest of the dead
lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Rev. 20:4-4
You will notice what happens in the resurrection.
The dead
live again.
The dead who did not get resurrected at the first resurrection
lived not again.
The reason we are told the dead live again at the first resurrection was because they were not alive until then.
Then we are plainly told apart from the resurrection the dead live not.
The key being "lived not". The dead are not living.
