If I Were President: Gun Control Policy

If I were President, I'd consider the following policies:
1.) Reinstitute the assualt weapons ban and strengthen definition of "assualt weapon". I'd allow "assualt weapon permits" for those who can pass a background check, undergo the proper training, and justify the need to own one. I'd also set the ban to expire in ten years, allowing a national study to determine if the ban was effective or not before allowing it to expire.

2.) I'd close gun show loopholes and require background checks for anyone wishing to purchase a firearm.

3.) I'd strengthen security and screening in the public schools. Even support the hiring of armed private security.

4.) I'd also allow schools, libraries, churches, and other businesses and/or agencies to "opt out" of being "gun free zones", thereby allowing registered and trained "staff" with concealed carry permits to carry a weapon on the premisis.
I think this would be a civil compromise for the public good. Both gun control advocates and gun rights advocates could claim a victory as a result of mutual compromise. The ban wouldn't be permanent and we could revisit it to see if it would be worth continuing. Should the ban prove ineffective, we'd allow it to expire. In the end, the ban would be expired and gun rights would have been advanced in areas opting out of being "gun free zones".

Thoughts???

I'd simply have a background check and require gun training to own a gun. In the same way that you have to take a Driver's Ed course to get your Driver's License, I feel that anyone owning a gun, should have proper classes to teach proper usage and care of a gun.

I believe that's reasonable.

So you don't see the need to institute a temporary ban on assualt weapons designed to kill people en mass? Why would a soccar mom need a couple AR-15s and several hundred rounds???

Take away the "gun free" zones. I don't know of anyone who does not teach their children "gun safety". The government is the most inefficient means of doing anything. Whether it be procuring hammers, handling mail, or running trains the government wastes and wastes and wastes. To put the government in charge of "gun safety" would be to politicize something that is a constitutional right. Once a president is in place like the current president he would make it virtually impossible to either pass the class or even take the class. This same thing takes place with the "war on coal". The government cannot pass a law against using coal (cap and trade) so what the government cannot do overtly is being done covertly by the EPA. They have tightened up regulations concerning coal to the point that we will see coal electric plants shutting down thereby driving energy costs up.

Number 1 - keep the government out of it!
I have had weapons since I was a kid. They have never been pointed at anyone. People are the problem not the weapon.

The laws on the books are sufficient for the needs. No more laws are required. This individual was turned down already for a weapon - according to reports. He stole the weapon - according to reports.

Here is the problem and why everyone needs to chill - we don't know the whole story. Yet, gun grabbing politicians are using this heinous event to further their political agenda. They should be impeached for this disgrace. We need to understand what happened before taking knee jerk reactions to something we don't even understand.

Edited to add:
I am glad I am not president either.

No, because there are many MORE responsible, freedom loving Americans than these random acts of violence. We shouldn't punish the country for a few flakes that we will never in a million years be able to corral into a better mode of thinking and living.

Why does she have one? Because she likes to collect guns. She should have, as we do, a gun safe where only my husband knows the combination. Our son keeps his assault weapons in our safe as well, but even he doesn't have the combination. He has to ask my husband to open the safe when he wants to pet his guns. LOL!

We do keep our 12-gauge and handgun, outside of the safe, ready for use. I'm still working on my conceal carry permit. My husband is working out of town and probably will be for several more months. That's putting a little delay on everything, but I will eventually get it done.

I believe some zones should be “gun free”. Court buildings for example. In my proposal I’d allow for those zones that are currently “gun free” to “opt out” of being gun free so that they can allow essential staff with concealed carry permits to be armed on the premises. I believe that in time, most zones currently “gun free” would opt out. This allows a balance, and for each “gun free zone” to determine for itself if it is indeed necessary to be “gun free”.

So you don’t think a soccer mom should have to justify why she’d need an AR-15?
