If I were President, I'd consider the following policies:

I'd allow "assualt weapon permits" for those who can pass a background check, undergo the proper training, and justify the need to own one. I think this would be a civil compromise for the public good. Both gun control advocates and gun rights advocates could claim a victory as a result of mutual compromise. The ban wouldn't be permanent and we could revisit it to see if it would be worth continuing. Should the ban prove ineffective, we'd allow it to expire. In the end, the ban would be expired and gun rights would have been advanced in areas opting out of being "gun free zones".
