I don't think it's about being "fair", Daniel. Any good preacher or teacher knows that you won't get your message across if your audience is holding you at arms length for any reason. The first thing you have to do is set folks at ease, and make them like you. (Or at least give them a reason to hear what you have to say, and not give them any reason to turn a deaf ear.)
Since this is very visible and everyone will see it everytime, then I would say some sort of disclaimer would be in order, unless alienating the audience is the intended goal.
You can't influence someone and offend them at the same time. So if there is something about you that you know causes offense, and its something you can't help or change, then an explanation will be necessary, whether it is fair or not.
