I believe that when Jesus said, "Abide in me and I in you," he was showing how that OUR reliance upon Him will in turn cause Him to flow through us like sap (His Spirit) in a branch from a vine. I know people who do not bear fruit, although they have been saved. Why? They do not abide in Christ. "Abide in me" is a command.
We do not abide in Him simply because we have His Spirit, otherwise all the saints would ever manifest fruit. Paul taught Romans 6 to people who were not manifesting.
When we "get" Romans 6's teachings, we experience revelation. And revelation changes us.
2Co 3:18 KJV But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

I agree that we can be in Christ and not abide in Him .. my point is that "little children"/new believer .. can abide in Him too.
Futhermore, little children, was a term of endearment not to show position.
