I think she does her characters a disservice. If you have a character, like Tolkien's Gandalf, who transcends the temporal world you often will want to keep them from having "earthly ties" like marriage and etc. Their "family" is the world and they have greater things on their minds than sex. Such characters are useful to young readers who raging hormones may seem to dominate their thoughts at all times. The asexual character tells us that there are more important things than what makes your heart flutter.
Rowling appear to have robbed us of just such a thing.
