Well obviously the salvation issue didn't cast a "negative cloud" in the UPC as much as it does on this board, where people are under no "agreement" to keep quiet about their differences.
And frankly, all they did was sweep the issue under the rug. Doctrinally, it was like trying to mix oil and water --eventually there will be a separation; evidently, this is a key reason why there have been so many defections and splinters since the merger.
I think a reasonable argument could be made that the merger might not have been such a good idea in the first place. I'm not sure I would state that to be the case, but I could see how a lot of people (on both sides) might think so.
