Sis Willie Johnson, a black lady who always wore a white dress and a black cape. She could preach the house down. Flapping her cape and putting the fear of God in all the young people.
Remember Sister Willie Johnson. She would say, "Folks ask me why I don't preach to sinners, but I'm preachin' to the sinners in Zion." And she did.

Re: I remember when...

I remember when there were no forums. We all felt isolated and thought all other churches were less holy and more out of touch.

It is good to see no matter your place.

We all love the Lord, the saints and our pastors...

Ministers today have less control.

When they say things out in space.

We post it here and it goes around the globe in 15 minutes.

Did anyone else's church call their adult lesson books "quarterlies"? I will always remember my dad having his Bible, his "quarterly" and his tithe check (which I think was about $15 at the time) laying on the kitchen table on Saturday nights.

I remember Sis Tamel the pastors wife in the early 80's teaching adult lessons from the quarterly.

There was a big lesson on cutting hair for woman.

When ever that lesson came up the church was down by 30%.

It was rough to publish the lesson.

Then when worship service started the rest would show up...

oh ya, I remember having "quarterlies".

And do you remember the magazine the UPC used to put out for Apostolic youth? I'm racking my brain trying to remember what it was called........... anyone remember? I know it always had some really good articles in it. I really loved reading it. At our church we got that, and the Ohio Apostolic News and the magazine put out by headquarters. Geesh! I'm feeling brain dead tonight. Help me out folks. What were they called?

I remember sitting in church and reading those magazines (unless of course it happened to be at a time when I was banished to the front pew to sit. That happened alot Guess I shoulda behaved better, eh? LOL )

Yes, I remember "quarterlies" - all the classes old enough to read had one, not just the adults.

I remember Lois and Floella Forbes. Does anyone else?

I remember Sister Charlotte and her powerful testimony of being in the convent.

Re: I remember when...

When church went long and I got restless since I loved to read I might read the whole "quarterly" before the service was over. Willie Johnson fascinated me with her Black cape and how she would say, "He is extra-nordin-nary!" I remember Floella Forbes and Sister Charlotte, Mother Holmes, and Edna Showman, Edna Mills and Eunice Howerton, Ila Ashcraft and Willia "Bill" Peters. All very powerful women preachers and personalities. Oh yes, and Carrie Eastridge who spent much of her late years with the American Indians. Oma Ellis, the sister of one of my College teachers, Jesse Francis, was another memory. Pentecost was well represented by a powerful array of ladies in the years past.
I think I was warned that when you get to reminiscing about the past that it's a sign of advancing age. I really must be getting old!

Yes, Sherri we called our Adult lesson books, Quarterlies....I guess because they got ordered every quarter.

Was it called The Conqueror?

I too am so amazed that though we were all miles apart, and we thought sometimes we were the only ones doing things the way we did that there are so many similarities. How did this happen especially with no internet? lol

Re: I remember when...

I've said it before- this is the all-time best thread. Sister Barb gets a pernament GOLD STAR for this one.I know few of the names mentioned in these posts, but its so good to see people here finding the common ground of memories- bonds that hold them and us together. Im reminded of when I was a kid, sittin out in the yard at night, listening to my Mom and Edith Tackett, our neighbor, Talking about people I didn't know, places I had never been- but as they talked, it seemed I was there and I knew... really knew...the people they were discussing. I guess it was during those times that I felt part of something...

And I feel that way now. This little thread has helped me to make it thru one more day. Like "Hearteyes" said, right now I feel so isolated and little. But this thread...and knowing there are people I don't know, and more than likely will never meet, praying for little insignificant me and my very significant better half- I really feel I'm a very small part of something really, really big- The Family of God. And, thats okay. at least I'm a part.

Precious memories...how they linger...."
