I agree that modest living is a good thing. I just don't think that living cheaply is the equivalent of modesty. Nor is it handling money wisely, IMO.

As I have said before, I have had three brand new suits in my life.
The others, I wisely purchased from Vale Village, or Sally Anne!
If you saw them you could not tell the difference!
I'll wear dead man's suits!
Is that not a wise decision?

But, how do onlookers know it was a gift? Most would think you purchased it.
So, wouldn't that be a violation of your convictions?
What about the verse that says to "avoid the appearance of evil"?
Just curious what other's thoughts are on the subject.

Well, first off, anyone who knows me, knows it was a gift.
Number two, I never referred to this as something that I think is evil, I don't think it is evil, I think it is wasteful. My parents drive cars that are nicer than I think is necessary, I don't judge them for it, I know that they are not pride driven people. My conviction is against spending the money on it, not how it appears to people.
It is just my personal conviction, and I think that there are situations where it becomes wrong. IMO

I agree MB. Except for me it would be a waste on clothes because I can't seem to stay the same size. BUT on shoes I have spent on an average over a $100.00 a pair and still have the shoes. Some are 20 years old but still wear great. Unfortunately, I can't find J'Renee's in a size 5 in the stores any more.
But that would average out less than $5.00 a pair of beautiful classy shoes! besides the fact good shoes are better for your feet.

Reminds me of a joke I heard Joyce Meyer say yesterday ...
The husband had just finished reading the book ' Man of the House.'
He stormed into the kitchen and walked directly up to his wife, pointing a finger in her face, he said,
'From now on I want you to know that I am the man of the house and my word is law. I want you to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm finished eating my meal, I expect a scrumptious dessert. Then, after dinner, you are going to draw me my bath so I can relax. And when I'm finished with my bath, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?
His wife replies, 'the funeral director would be my guess'

Hey, I have nothing against buying things on consignment, from an outlet or wherever. I save money wherever I can. It's a must in our household!!!! But it is silly for me to purchase cheaply made items that I will have to replace a few months later--when I could have bought quality, and my purchase would have lasted longer.
Case in point: Tennis shoes. They're a semi-annual purchase around here, for the kids. IF we buy good quality, that is. Buy a pair from Target, and they'll probably be in the trash can in 2 months.

Ya I remember that. I personally like the older Chevy pickups and SUV's because the parts are easy to change, cheap because they didn't change them every year, and roomy enough for me to actually change them myself.

The point that seems to missed here is that it is not the vehicle itself, it is the money spent. I don't really care what people think, I care about whether I am following my conscience.
I frequently shop at Goodwill, and I frequently find clothes that originally cost much more than I would ever spend on clothes. I wear them with no shame, because I know I didn't violate my conscience in buying them.
