Rhoni, no one is saying it should be a hard and fast rule that everyone has to obey or be lost.
Exactly. I think what may have got everything started is that DM posted an OT scripture to back his belief. God forbid anyone around here ever glean even the first thing from the OT around here!
Brothers before this thing gets out of hand and shut down let me say that noone is telling you that you should engage before church or that you are wrong for abstaining if you choose. The issue that most had was with how it was framed.
"some things of the old testament are worth observing for the sake of wisdom but I wouldn't expect everyone to be sincerely searching the presence of God in their lives."
And then you went on to say that it is common sense that if a couple engages the presence of God will not manifest.
That went well beyond just personal preference into critisizing those who did not hold to this. I just don't believe that the presense of God manifesting in one of our services depends on whether all of our couples...or even the fornicators abstained before church.

Maybe that's what got it started. Either way, something like that needs to be left up to each couple. I never heard anyone preaching this from the pulpit. In fact, I came up with the idea on my own, after reading that scripture that talks about a man being defiled until evening. It got me to wondering if partaking with the wife on church could have a hindering effect on my being used by God while in service, or if it would hinder my being able to receive everything He had for me in a service. I showed the scripture to the wife, we talked about it, and decided to give abstaining a try. Like I said, there wasn't some major blessing that fell on at church, but it did help some with staying focused.
if I remember correctly that thread got shut down. Leviticus clearly states that engaging with a spouse makes you "unclean til the even". I still hold to the view that couples shuldn't engage on the day of a church service in order to be prepared to enter the presence of God. It's about spiritual reverence.
Are you serving Christ under the New Covenant, or under the Old?
That same book talks about a how a woman and her household should conduct themselves while she in on her menstrual cycle. Do you also hold to this as being applicable today? (And if not, why not?):
'If a woman has a discharge, and the discharge from her body is blood, she shall be set apart seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening. Everything that she lies on during her impurity shall be unclean; also everything that she sits on shall be unclean. Whoever touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. And whoever touches anything that she sat on shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. If anything is on her bed or on anything on which she sits, when he touches it, he shall be unclean until evening. And if any man lies with her at all, so that her impurity is on him, he shall be unclean seven days; and every bed on which he lies shall be unclean.' (Lev 15:19-24)

To say "the presence of God will not manifest" if a couple engages before church is controversial and not biblical. IMO, it's grossly absurd. To be honest, some might do better to engage before church so they can get their mind on God in the service rather than counting the minutes til they can go home and "engage".

Brother, you can't be posting those scriptures here. They're offensive to some people, ya know.

I see where you guys are coming from now, and maybe it's just one of those things that can happen sometimes. You know how it goes. The Lord shows you a little something, you try it out and find that it works well for you, you then end up thinking God leads everyone (or most everyone) down the same road, so you think it's for everybody. Who knows? We never said anything to anyone when we were doing this, except to let our pastor know we had found this scripture, gave it a try, and noticed a difference while in church services. Nothing more was said about it. I figured maybe there were other people who had tried it, but that's not the sort of thing you bring up during testimony service.

Please. Nobody could be offended by scriptures.
Well, I can think of a few, but... never mind.
:O)
