I think that the US is a tough place to live at times. McDonalds on every other corner and Starbucks on the others make it quick and easy to eat unhealthy. I have heard some people say that it only hurts themselves, when they eat bad and don't exercise. The truth is it hurts us all. I don't think every person needs six pack abs and ripped arms. But I feel that we need to be healthier than we are now. All we are doing is showing bad habits to our children. My wife is a soda drinker. Mainly she drinks Coca Cola. My 2 year old daughter has started drinking it too. I have made a big contention with my wife to at least move to Diet, No caff soda and move my daughter too. Eventually, hopefully sooner than later, my wife and dauther will stop altogether. It is just unsafe.

Actually, if you look at the research, diet sodas are much worse or at least just as bad for you as the reg. kind. Even if you are looking at it from only a weight loss perspective, there are many studies that show that something in the composition of diet sodas actually can cause you to gain weight.
It is much better to cut out carbonated drinks altogether, there are so many health issues with drinking any soda, diet or otherwise. I broke a serious addiction to them about 5 years ago, and after the initial adjusting period, I don't miss them at all.

My father, in Tn, works with a man that is a tri-athlete. The man is as healthy as anyone my father knows. Last week the man had to have emergency open heart surgery or he would have died. That kinda stuff puts things in perspective for me. I gotta be healthy to prolong my life for myself and for the future generations that follow, like kids and grand kids.
I would advise against DIET unless you are a diabetic and then I wouldn't advise it.
There is too much evidence that it is much less healthy for you than regular sugar.

I do weights/cardio about 3xs a week and have just started doing Cardio on the alternating days.
I don't want to get big, just toned and stronger.
My reps on bench press went from doing 70lbs to now doing reps with 100lbs.
So it is working.
keep it up! Doing something is MUCH better than doing nothing. I don't want to get so big that I can not clap my hands together, but I ain't scared of having my shirts tighter and not cause of a big belly. My workouts are fairly tough I make myself throw up often. But it gets results for me. If they weren't as tough it might get burnt out and quit. M,F upper body with each exercise having sets like this, 12, 10, 8, 6, 12, 12. Start with weight lower then increase as you go. Same for the lower body. Example is hammer curls set of 12 with 45-50lbs then increase to when I am at the set of 6 I am at 65 lbs. Cardio 30 minutes on the elliptical machine at around 7 mph gets me about 3.5 miles. Depending on it I got alot of energy it is a greater distance.
