Mal 2:1
2:1 And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.
KJV
He never stops speaking to them through chapter 2 into 3. This why he says Ye have robbed me EVEN this whole nation(people). Wouldn't make since to say nation if the nation(people) was doing the robbing.

Abraham was offering the customary tenth to the local ruler, the priest of Salem. It essentially was a peace offering, seeing he'd just sacked Sodom.
No offense taken. I'm enjoying the discussion. God bless!

I realize pastors have abused authority but that does not replace the true nature of their calling.. to watch for our souls. If God moves on them to direct us to tithe, if we are under that leadership, we had better tithe.

The word "obey" in the verse you gave is,
3982 // peiyw // peitho // pi'-tho //
a primary verb; TDNT - 6:1,818; v
AV - persuade 22, trust 8, obey 7, have confidence 6, believe 3,
be confident 2, misc 7; 55
1) persuade
1a) to persuade, i.e. to induce one by words to believe
1b) to make friends of, to win one's favour, gain one's good
will, or to seek to win one, strive to please one
1c) to tranquillise
1d) to persuade unto i.e. move or induce one to persuasion to
do something
2) be persuaded
2a) to be persuaded, to suffer one's self to be persuaded; to
be induced to believe: to have faith: in a thing
2a1) to believe
2a2) to be persuaded of a thing concerning a person
2b) to listen to, obey, yield to, comply with
3) to trust, have confidence, be confident It means to be persuaded by through Biblical teaching. It doesn't mean you are to "obey" their edicts. If something isn't supported in Scripture, they can rant all day long. Obedience isn't required of you.

Re: Tithe-vs-Paying Your Bills
I'm finding this very interesting. Those who have been taught and conditioned to believe that the tithe is binding upon Christians are among those who know the least about what the Bible actually says about the biblical tithe. Hmmmm

Awwww! You beat me too it!
Context demands the priesthood was being addressed. I've even found some Jewish sources that point out that this is addressed to a priesthood that had become neglectful of their duties towards the poor and the Temple.

Re: Tithe-vs-Paying Your Bills
Remember... there were three tithes in the OT. One was the Levitical Tithe... given to the priesthood. One was a Temple Tithe... given to sustain the Temple and feastdays. One was a Poor Tithe given every third year.
If the Pastor takes a tithe as did the priesthood... should he not require another 10% for the church facilities and yet another for the poor?
Let's be real here. It was an angrarian land tax and welfare system, wherein the priesthood was funded.

True, When I taught it to new converts that was the case. Certain things have been put in us as sacred. That's why it's so hard to let it go.

Speaking of taxes, does a king tax strangers or his sons?
