So why the battle of comments I see against the UPC?
|
Many people were members of a UPC church but came to dislike the standards of dress and lifestyle. Many people have wounds and hurts. Some haven't gotten over them. Some have. The UPC has brought a lot of criticism down on itself, but a lot of criticism directed at it is also the same type of criticism most modern people would direct at any church that tried to have some kind of standards.

If you have another org, what is it and what makes it so different?

I don't belong to any 'organization' in the sense you are referring. I do not believe the Church is a 501(c)3 non profit corporation. I do not believe any corporation can be the church. And most 'institutional churches' whether they are incorporated or not do not follow apostolic (Biblical) patterns of church government, discipline, and order, nor do they follow apostolic customs/traditions (as referenced by the apostle Paul), nor do they teach the fullness of apostolic doctrine (the entire Bible).
And quite honestly (just my opinion here) I think most of them are money-making enterprises, or 'wanna be money making' enterprises. But then maybe I'm just jaded.
We were with a house church for awhile but moved away and the others moved away and so we are stuck with home church for now, which is fine, it's how they did it from Adam to Sinai.
I never had a problem with 'cult-like' behaviour with the UPC or ALJC or Independent assemblies I have been involved with, although many here would call them cults.
To me, a 'dangerous cult' is a group that uses actual force to control you - like Jim Jones' group or how the Roman Catholic Church and Lutheran churches and other Protestant churches used to do business...
