Our conviction is based off of the scripture in Proverbs.

(Proverbs 23:20 KJV) Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

If you look at that in plain english, it says not to be around people that are drinking. Its pretty clear. A winebibber is one who drinks wine. The original greek word for winebibber is oinopotēs.

oino: wine
potēs: drinker

The Bible says not to be around people who drink wine....or alcohol, if you please.
So you would have rebuked Jesus at the wedding and left post haste?

Jesus did not drink alcohol......there are 7-8 different definitions of wine in the greek and hebrew. When it was translated to english, the translators combined them all into the word "wine". There the wine Jesus drank was non-alcoholic according to the greek. It was juice. We did the same thing in english with the word cider. Apple cider is not alcoholic, unless you mix it with alcohol. Why dont you look up what the bible says about mixed drinks?

I would like to point out that jews, following the law were not allowed to drink alcoholic beverages. That included the Lord Himself. How hypocritical would that be, for Jesus to say the things He did in scripture about alcohol, and then turn around and fill 7 pots full of booze for a drunken party? They would make my Lord a hypocrite, and if He was a hypocrite, He is no longer truth. That means that God can be wrong. That means that God can lie and I am sorry but Jesus Christ is NONE of those.

I'm a preacher of abstinence for alcohol, but I have to say much of what you said is not true whatsoever. Most scholars concede the wine at that wedding was literally wine -- yes, alcoholic! That culture and time, wine was drank to sooth an illness (for the stomach's sake) or to help dilute the unsanitary water.

Liquor was liquor. The Bible takes a stand against drunkenness, not wine itself. You won't find such a scripture. Jesus was accused of being a winebibber, not because the people he hung out with drank juice.

If you were to really follow this verse you couldn't eat with most Apostolics.

We used to be UPC years ago, but the whole television thing came in and we left. Well another topic for another time....lol.

Hey all, I saw your posts, I will get to them as soon as I can. I am on a work computer and I am sure Tech support wouldnt find it at all funny to see a theological debate about the evils of alcohol occuring on a work computer. LOL! I will respond later....
