I still think AD is a lot more liberal than it's Nova Scotian brethren to the east... or it's Maine brethren to the south.
Me thinks this was an awful big generalization since not all pastors in every district(including the AD) see eye to eye on certain things.

He he, your the best EEE, you crack me up.
On the same topic, if you really want to know how liberal/conservative a district is, go to a Wal-Mart or a mall and look at our women. There is a jean skirt-Tennis shoe ratio formula that exists, use that, and then you will know how liberal a district is. By my count, due to a recent trip to the Regent Mall, conservatisim is still pretty strong in our area!!!
Tennis shoes in 18 inches of slush and snow? How long exactly have you been OUT of California again?
Monkeydude, it is a seasonal thing. In the summer, recount after the galoshes and overcoats are packed away!

ME thinks I'm tired of all this.. since I was only giving my opinion. I still think our district is more liberal than some.. or moderate.. whatever you'd like to call it. I just know it's changed.

Here is another test for you, try this. Go to Harvey Camp, take your choir, sing, "Silver & Gold" by Kirk Franklin and let me know how that goes for ya! Go to Family Camp and try to lead song service with a song from last, say, 20 years that isn't country in flavor, have at it...you WON'T be asked back, Heeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Obviously I am having some fun with this, that is my nature. I also use different criteria to state whether someone is liberal/mod/con...using my logic (scary) I would say the AD is pretty Moderate.
Your logic is very logical in the most logical sense of the word.
Funny though how some think we are liberal, while others feel like we are conservative.
I was to a certain place once in the States where I was forewarned not to preach the "clothesline" as the AD preachers had a name for being "clothesline" preachers.

But, don't you know what happens to folks who travel in the middle of the road? They get run over, right?????
WRONG! The road I'm on is "The Way" which is, the last time I checked, a one-way street. There's no oncoming traffic to concern anyone who is following Jesus Christ on the road to our eternal destiny. There's not even a middle of the road. It's a narrow way that only allows room for Jesus and whoever is traveling this road with Him.
All these "pigeon holes" are for those, who like the pigeons, enjoy p _ _ ping on things, and whose brains are not much larger than the pigeon and therefore have no discretion when it comes to dealing with folks who don't agree with them. :)
The Bible instructs us to respect all who are part of the family of God.
If God gives a person the Spirit of adoption, and they call Him "Abba" and He calls them "son," I'm happy to call them brother or sister. I don't have to agree with them or even like them, but they're family and I plan to spend eternity with them, so let's celebrate our difference, worship our Saviour, preach the Gospel, and stop being pigeons.

What constitutes a pigeon hole?
pigeonhole:
1. a hole or recess, or one of a series of recesses, for pigeons to nest in. 2. one of a series of small compartments in a desk, cabinet, or the like, used for filing papers, letters, etc. 3. to lay aside for future reference. 4. to put aside and ignore. 6. to put into categories.
I am using it in the sense of #6. We have a tendency to pigeon hole people, or put them in a category that brushes them with the same brush as others we have decided belong to the same group.
My experience has been that it's possible for a person to be liberal on some matters, conservative on others, and take a moderate position on other issues. However, in order for someone to discover this they would have to actually get to know someone and have conversations with them. For some people that's just too much effort, so they simply "pigeon hole" them.

From where I sit, you are completely right.
If you watch Hollywood at home, it's the same as watching it at Empire Theatres.
If you trim your hair, it's the same as if you cut it to your shoulders.
If you color your hair, it's the same as coloring your cheeks or finger nails.

I wonder which is worse... no fashion sense (tennis shoes and jean skirts when not walking in the park) or no common sense... short flimsy jackets and sandals in the middle of a New Brunswick winter..
One is as bad as the other I think.. but I tend to forgive the no fashion sense faster than no common sense!

Who is going to Sussex to pastor, seems to be the million dollar question!!

Or did they miss the "will of God" [now there is a ancient and foreign term] when they took the only vote so far?

The times they are a changing.
I think there are several factors, not sure any of them are good.
* Too many guys who have 8-10 years of experience are dropping out of pastoring.
* Older men are retiring instead of continuing to pastor until they drop in the pulpit.
* More emphasis on secular education
* Ministry as a career rather than a calling. If it is only a career you will switch careers.
* Churches realize that they are paying good money and are no longer willing to just accept a warm living body.
* Expectations have gone through the roof.
It's interesting that Bro. Trevor Neil predicted this ministerial shortage 10+ years ago in a study he did for the Canada Conference.

Somebody needs to put their name in the hat. As for me, the last two churches I pastored I started out with 20-25. Any bigger than that would be too intimidating.:horn

Sussex voted on one of the church elders son and he did not get it as is apparent. Or do you mean what wa the result of him not getting it? :jolly
Sussex averaging 100???? Ummmm, not so sure that would be correct...

I remember Bro. Neil's report, and the guy who got up after him and said, "I don't know about numbers, but we're having (or going to have) revival."
Go to the AD web site and look for active pastors under 40 years old. You can count them on a mill worker's fingers. It ain't any better in the ACOP or Independent churches either.

I thought the split in Sussex was fairly even, about 150 in each direction. I would have guessed that Abundant Life was closer to 150 than 100. I know that Calvary is doing well and seeing growth and Holy Ghost baptisms.

Ummmm.... i need to be careful here... but I really do not think Abundant Life is running anywhere close to 150.... it would honestly surprise me if they were hitting the 100 mark... I do not know this for sure but it would surprise me...

Wow, you are on a roll tonight!!
And I totally agree, a prince of man and a Bible Teacher par excellance!!
I have been blessed to know many great men of God, men of whom this world was not worthy. My pastor, Lloyd Williams, RA Beesley, AW Post, CB Dudley, MF Urquhart, HD McNair, George Shalm, Jimmy Burns, and many, many others. Our Pentecostal heritage in NB is rich and deep.
Along with them I could list an even longer list of laymen and women that I have known who have shown me what it means to be a Christian. It's a season to celebrate blessing and my life has been richly blessed by God and His people.

The move from one church to the other probably seesaws back and forth as circumstances change in each church. There has always been and will always be what Jeff Arnold calls "gypsy's for Jesus" I guess.
I am only guessing on a ballpark for abundant Life but I would say 75-85... but someone on here probably knows the real figures....

Good question.
If you're in a service, and if, when the service reaches a Pentecostal frenzy, the Pastor shouts, "Give your neighbour a 'High Four!'" You're probably in a mill town.

Family resemblance
A new baby is born and before long is surrounded by Grannie and the great aunts who peer into the still red face looking for a family resemblance. One sees grandfather's eyes, another grandmother's chin, and all claim a direct reflection of their side of the family.
As the child grows, every peculiar mannerism or quirky habit draws a comparison to a favorite memory about mom or dad. A family resemblance is seen in the shape of the facial features, an awkward gait, or a particular talent. Children resemble their parents; they have the "family look."
If you are a born again believer, you are a child of God, and a member of the family of God. Do you resemble your Father? Do you have the family look? Can people look into your eyes and see your Savior? Can they watch the way you walk and see your Father? If they already know your Father, will they see the family resemblance when they meet you?

One More:
SERVING GOD THROUGH THE WINTER: The winter season is a divine creation, born of the will and wisdom of our all wise Creator. Winter is a divinely appointed object lesson, a message from God penned with cold white ink. Winter is a season of nature and a season of the soul.
Every believer must serve God through the winters of life. Winter is a season of coldness, barrenness, and bleakness, when we must trust in the providence of God and believe in the promise of Spring. It is a time to live by faith.
Winter is a passing season, not a permanent condition; no matter how long or harsh, every recorded winter has had to surrender to the warmth of Spring. Long nights and cold days will be replaced with sunshine and warmth. Winter is long, but it doesn't last forever.

The interconnection of people in NB always amazes me, and it's even more prominent within the Pentecostal family. I met a young couple last week who I had never met before; it turned out in conversation that I knew several of his family members, and that he was related to one of my sister-in-laws and his wife was related to another of my sister-in-laws.

My dad's family were all Baptist. Devout. My mom won my dad to Pentecost through witnessing to him. I've read a lot of the letters that went back and forth between them while they were dating. Very interesting! Mom was quite the preacher! :) Dad never really had an experience with God until after, through mom's witness and influence, he started attending a Pentecostal church.
My mom was the one who brought her sisters and mother into Pentecost. They, unlike she though, never accepted the Oneness message.

We're supposed to get rain for Christmas here. It's snowing hard right now. We probably have about 2 inches on the ground. A park borders our house at the back and the trees look so beautiful with a heavy coating of snow.
It's supposed to turn to rain later I guess.
I always hated 'green' Christmases back home. Just didn't seem like Christmas without snow. And snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas day was perfect.

First of all, I want to say that I enjoy creative, interpretive dance. I have been deeply moved on so many occasions while watching interpretive dance in worship.
However, I wondered as I watched this if an apology has been given to churches like Smythe Street Cathedral who have been criticized for years for having interpretive dance as part of their worship service. The difference that I observe is that the UPC churches tend to like songs that are more of a rock and roll style that has lots of energy, whereas most creative dance I have seen is slower and tend to have more elegant, professional dance routines. Perhaps that will come as this ministry develops.
I applaud CCC for introducing interpretive dance to their worship. Dance was intended to be very much a part of our worship of God. I don't believe the dance mentioned in scripture is what most Pentecostal churches have and call "shockamoo". God is a creative and orderly God, not one of chaos and confusion.
There's my ramblings for the day. :)

I grew up in Fredericton when Smythe Street was the "talk of the town," but if we apologized to everybody for our changing ideas every time an idea changed, we'd not have any time to preach the Gospel.
Imitation is still the sincerest form of flattery, and probably the best apology.

I have never seen the Smythe Street interpretive dances... so I'm not commenting on those, but I was to an event recently where there was a choreographed dance to a popular worship song. It wasn't mostly sign, with modestly dressed young people filled with the Holy Ghost themselves doing it... it was a secular dance troupe, dressed in tight form fitted ballet outfits doing a dance that in some parts was provocative.
I still can't agree with just anything being done in the name of worship...

"Sign," as in sign language for the deaf?
I have never seen liturgical dancers that were immodest or provocative - I'm agin' being either immodest or provocative in the name of the Lord.
I have seen liturgical dancers who were modest, extraordinarily well choreographed and whose worship was very beautiful.
This is a difficult discussion because it has a video attached to it, a video clip of some great young people praising the Lord in a very expressive manner.
Liturgical dancing under the banner of "sign" is a whole separate discussion.

Yes, that's my church as well as Monkeyman's.
They don't do much by way of dance, they do what they call interpretive sign... not all of it is official sign language. All the ladies wear the same "flowy-ishing" tops so there is no immodesty.
That is (correct me if I'm wrong anyone from CCC) the most upbeat song they do. Most of their songs are slower, and are mostly hand movement and expression and some acting... That's the one song they move around more on. They are under the umbrella of drama team. The "sticks" are as well.

Would I be correct to say that Interpretive Sign involves hand movements, and is to be distinguished from Interpretive Dance which is more whole bodied?
Please understand that I am in no way critical of either signing or dancing, but am curious about the concept of Interpretive Sign?

I think that the value in using a sound track for such a performance is the consistency of the product and the difficulty in finding someone to play and sing a song a thousand times while the performers get their moves down pat.

Yes, I would say so. They never do "dance" moves. The jumping on that song is about the only dance they do. And on a regular Sun service we don't have fog and lights. I'm not sure when exactly that was recorded, I'm guessing Youth Explosion.
Please understand that I am in no way critical of either signing or dancing, but am curious about the concept of Interpretive Sign?
I don't believe I've seen or heard of any UPC church doing actual choreographed dances... someone can correct me if I'm wrong though. A lot of churches have been doing the signing though.
Boomm, I certainly wasn't referring to standards when I said our girls were wearing flowing garments while doing their thing... just that they were modest about it. (as opposed to the secular dance troupe I had seen at a gospel event recently

The Christmas Eve service is one of my favourite parts of the whole church Christmas celebration. We intersperse readings of the Christmas story, from the Anunciation to Mary to the Wise Men's visit, with Christmas carols, and have a short, but inspiring (I hope), message from the pastor, and conclude with Christmas cookies and punch (Kool Aid drill).
We were going to have an interpretive dance troupe, dressed as elves, do Jingle Bell Rock, but I've got under conviction over that, so, now, we're just going to have a brother that talks with his hands do one of the readings and call it Interpretive Sign. :penguin:penguin:penguin

Alex was a tremendous young man who has left an outstanding example to all of what it is to be a Christian regardless of what life throws at you .He will be sorely missed not only by his family but by his church family and friends. He is a brother to Richard Bragdon, the assistant pastor to Bro.Beesley at Sunset church. My prayers are with the Bragdon family as they look to God for strength at this difficult time.
Truly Blessed

I want to add my condolences and prayers for the the Alex Bragdon Family. He certainly left a amazing witness of being a committed Christian. He proved that if we are in the world, but not of this world we will discover what is truly meaningful in life, no matter how difficult or painful life becomes. While suffering unimaginable physical pain Jesus loved people anyway. Like Jesus, Alex proved that no matter what life hands us, we can demonstrate how to respond in a way that is consistent with our spirit and our faith. He has impacted many lives at Sunset Church from what my relatives tell me.

Hmmm, wellllll I would like to be there to see that :jollyWell, if you had been in the right place at the right time at the Summer Summit you would have. Hehe.
If you'd been with us another evening you might have seen the the camp Bible teacher grab my hand and walk me to the car too. There are definite advantages to age. ;)

For us it is literally a Boxing Day as we pack for our return trip to NB on Saturday, December 29th. Please pray for a safe trip as we make this 10-12 day journey by U Haul through the USA. The weather has been pretty bad of late in some of these states we will travel through.
Enjoy your travels and enjoy the ministry in Temperance Vale. I had the wrong TB going to Sussex. Me bad!

If TB is leaving TV ,I wonder how many will be feeling the call-I guess we won't have to wait for spring to see some movement in the AD.
