I'm cynical of ANYONE who says that GOD told them to do anything! Why can't a preacher OWN UP to his decision instead of putting it off on God? Is it because if it turns out to be the wrong decision, it's God's fault and not theirs?
Why can't a preacher say, "After much prayer and consideration, I have decided...."?
I think I know.......because saying "God told me" gives it special spiritual weight!

The problem is in your own words--you are cynical of anyone who says they heard from God.
Do you believe the Bible? The Bible, in fact Jesus Himself said "my sheep know my voice."
Without a doubt some have abused people's trust and claimed to have heard from God when they didn't, but that is no reason to throw out a Biblical reality.
I hope you can overcome your negativity, Sir.
God might want to speak to you some time, and I would hate for you to be so cynical toward such things that He couldn't get through to you.

Re: Post UPCI Gen Supt. Election Questions
*sigh*
If you guys want to doubt PM's motives in spite of the fact that he stated his reason, then be my guest--it's a free country. However, I find it disturbing that we can't or won't accept another Christian's explanation for their actions.
Why haven't any of you called up PM and asked him directly about his reason[s] for withdrawing his name? Are you interested in the truth? Since no one can REALLY know a person's motives except God (and that person), I would think you need to either pray and ask God to reveal PM's motives to you, or ask PM directly.
I am OKAY with conjecture and speculation and discussion--until a person states their specific motive. After that, further (contradictory) conjecture or speculation is basically calling that person dishonest. (And sometimes there's reason to do that--but I haven't seen anyone present any compelling evidence that PM is a dishonest man.)
I'm not comfortable with that. Even when I feel doubt, I feel compelled (like mizpeh) to CHOOSE to accept their explanation.

Do I believe that God spoke in an audible voice? no!
Do I feel that they feel a "release" in their spirit for a decision after prayer? Yes!
I do feel that God can influence good decision making. I don't feel that God audibly makes the decision for you.
"God told me" is a term used to give special spiritual emphasis to a decision or opinion. After all, to disagree means you're going against God's will!

Re: Post UPCI Gen Supt. Election Questions
Even if God did audibly speak to you, is there an obligation to name drop?

Re: Post UPCI Gen Supt. Election Questions
Mr. Steinway, if you've never heard the voice of God speak to you, audibly or not, then perhaps you haven't been listening. Prayer is two-way communication. I have never heard an audible voice (meaning one that other people around me could hear), but I have heard God's voice clear as a bell, and it is to be obeyed without question.
And YES, disobeying His voice means you are NOT in His will. I suggest you read the story of Jonah.

If God were to speak in an audible voice, I'd be concerned at not hearing the still small voice first...
Who gives the release in their spirit? The person or God.
I think we're arguing semantics ... a person saying "God told me" or "God spoke to me" could also mean they felt a release in their spirit after prayer.
God still directed the course and action ... just not in an out loud, everyone could hear, audible way. He still "spoke" thru His spirit within the individual.
I'm guessing, but this could be what PM was speaking of.
In any case, no one has the right to judge. It's between that individual and God as to what their motives are.

I have felt a release in my spirit for a decision after prayer. It turns out that in most of those instances, it turned out to be the correct decision. For the few that didn't turn out so well, I guess I mistook the "release" as the voice of God.
That being said, I wouldn't ever name-drop and say that God told me to make any decision. I might say that I feel that God impressed on me to make a decision. I will own the decision!
I have no reason to appear a spiritual elite to my church friends.

If we used the Scripture as our baseline instead of comparing ourselves among ourselves, we wouldn't think it took a spiritual elitist to hear from God.
I guess this is a sign of how far some of us have drifted.

Yep. True.

You're not allowed to discuss specifics on this forum. You get crucified for doing so, even if there are incidents that you witnessed firsthand. You get labeled as a malcontent, a crank, bitter, disrespectful, etc... It's just not worth the trouble to say anything specific here.
